DENZA BAO 5, the first BYD SUV for Europe with 544 HP and 835 km of range
DENZA expands its European range with BAO 5, the first SUV from BYD's flagship brand for the continental market. The debut occurs at the Goodwood Festival of Speed and introduces a plug-in hybrid with 544 HP, 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and a 90 km WLTP electric range, featuring a frame with longitudinal beams, three electronic differentials, and the DiSus-P system.
The first Denza SUV BAO 5 takes Denza into new territory compared to the Z: no longer just an electric supercar or grand tourer, but an SUV designed to combine traditional use, off-road capability, and high-level equipment. Denza refers to a strategy for European expansion that starts here, with orders expected in the summer and first deliveries scheduled for the last quarter of the year.
The technical base is the hybrid plug-in DMO platform with a 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine, two electric motors, and a Blade battery of 31.8 kWh integrated with Cell-to-Chassis technology. The total power reaches 544 HP and 760 Nm, available in two variants: Elegance and Ultimate.
The most immediate figure is the acceleration: BAO 5 completes the 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds for the Elegance version and 5.0 seconds for the Ultimate, with a maximum speed capped at 180 km/h. In terms of energy, the declared WLTP electric range is 90 km, while the combined figure reaches 835 km.
AC charging is at 11 kW, while in DC the SUV accepts up to 100 kW, charging from 30% to 80% in 16 minutes. This configuration aims to simplify mixed use and allows the hybrid system to cover longer transfers without overly penalizing the electric part.
Off-Road and Setup
The BAO 5 is not limited to asphalt numbers. The press release emphasizes the longitudinal beam chassis, double-wishbone suspension on both axles, locking electronic differentials at the front and rear, and DiSus-P body control system on the Ultimate version.
The latter can also raise the clearance to reach 310 mm from the ground, with approach and departure angles of 39° and 34° respectively. Denza also indicates a towing capacity of 2,500 kg and a minimum turning radius of 5.9 meters, two figures that help position the BAO 5 between urban use and more technical employment.
The interior follows the premium layout already seen in other models from the brand, featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch central display, head-up display, and a dedicated screen for the passenger. Denza also integrates Google Built-in, digital key, NFC, and a voice assistant capable of managing over 300 functions of the vehicle.
The comfort features are also extensive: front seats with electric adjustments, massage, and lumbar support, leather or Nappa leather upholstery on the Ultimate, panoramic roof as standard, and a Devialet sound system with up to 18 speakers. Additionally, there is a refrigerated and heated compartment in the central tunnel with a capacity of 4.5 liters, a solution more typical of a luxury SUV than a pure off-roader.
The dimensions remain compact for the category: the BAO 5 measures 4,888 mm in the Elegance version and 4,921 mm in the Ultimate, with a width of 1,970 mm and a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. The trunk starts at 475 liters and rises to 1,069 liters with the rear seats folded down, or up to 1,736 liters using the space up to the roof.
For Europe, six metallic colors, one matte finish, and three interior combinations are expected.
