Intesa Sanpaolo Moves Core IT Systems to Google Cloud with TIM
Intesa Sanpaolo has completed the migration of its core IT systems to the cloud, concluding a digital transformation project carried out in collaboration with TIM and Google Cloud. The banking group has shifted its infrastructure to the two Italian regions of Google Cloud, located in Milan and Turin, and hosted in TIM's data centers, surpassing the technical objectives initially set.
The transfer involved a substantial portion of the group's information systems, with the declared goal of making the infrastructure faster, more secure, sustainable, and ready to accommodate artificial intelligence applications. The number reported by the three companies is over 800 applications migrated to Google Cloud's infrastructure, while an equal number have been decommissioned from the bank's physical systems.
Over 800 Applications Moved Without Incidents
The workload transferred, described as of very high complexity by TIM, did not cause any major incidents during the transition phases, a fact that the three companies claim as proof of the project's robustness under considerable data volumes. The combination of Google Cloud's infrastructure and the performance of data centers and connectivity provided by TIM ensured high speed of transfer and low latency between the old systems and the new cloud environments, with TIM also managing the end-to-end governance of the operation. Cost monitoring, according to a FinOps approach, allowed spending to be kept under control throughout the process.
The choice to rely on cloud regions physically located in Italy responds to a precise need of the bank: to keep data within national borders. This was clarified by Raffaele Gigantino, Country Manager Italy of Google Cloud, who emphasized that the two regions in Milan and Turin enabled Intesa Sanpaolo to meet its data residency requirements, in addition to providing the foundation for the future introduction of more advanced AI features.
For Intesa Sanpaolo, the project concludes the cycle of objectives set for the period 2022-2025 and paves the way for the new industrial plan for 2026-2029. Massimo Proverbio, Chief Data AI and Technology Officer of the bank, linked the migration to the construction of Isytech, the digital-native cloud technology platform that will serve clients and employees of the entire group. Proverbio also highlighted the hiring of new specialized staff and an absolute excellence positioning at the European level in security and innovation.
The transition to the cloud was accompanied by a training plan aimed at the bank's staff, with the goal of spreading a cloud-first culture within the organization. Overall, over 3,000 employees of Intesa Sanpaolo were involved, who achieved more than 170 Google Cloud certifications, more than 60 of which are advanced level.
For TIM, the result consolidates its role as an infrastructure partner in managing complex projects aimed at businesses and public administration. Elio Schiavo, Chief Enterprise & Innovative Solutions Officer of TIM, spoke of an integration between data centers, connectivity, and cloud solutions that allowed for the management of the migration while ensuring operational continuity and high performance throughout the entire process.
The banking group, which at the end of March 2026 had €430 billion in loans and over €1.4 trillion in financial assets of clients, remains the largest banking group in Italy. With this migration, it aims to place its technological infrastructure among the most modern and resilient in the European banking sector, in anticipation of upcoming AI applications in internal processes and customer services.
