Snap unveils new Specs: augmented reality glasses hit the consumer market

Snap has officially announced the launch of its first augmented reality glasses aimed at the consumer market. The new device, called Specs, represents an important step in the company's strategy, which has invested in the development of AR technologies based on the experience gained with the Spectacles introduced in 2016.

The glasses will be sold at a price of $2,195 and can already be pre-ordered through the dedicated website with a fully refundable $200 deposit. The first deliveries are expected in the fall in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France.

According to Snap, Specs are designed to operate completely autonomously and do not require external modules or wired batteries. The device will be available in two different sizes: a 47-millimeter version weighing 132 grams and a 52-millimeter version reaching 136 grams. Removable inserts compatible with various optical prescriptions will also be available.

Aesthetically, the glasses adopt a wide and easily recognizable frame, a choice that differentiates them from the main competitors on the market. They integrate cameras in the visible and infrared spectrum and feature a light indicator that activates during recordings to signal the use of the cameras.

Both lenses can display digital content. The display system uses proprietary technology based on liquid crystals on silicon, capable of offering a 51-degree field of view and reproducing up to 16 million colors. The lenses can also transition from transparent to tinted in about ten seconds.

Inside, two Snapdragon processors are housed with distinct tasks. One is dedicated to processing computer vision, while the other manages augmented reality applications. This configuration allows for rapid hand tracking and smooth interactions with digital elements superimposed on the real environment. The claimed battery life reaches 4 hours of continuous use.
