Green Light in 17 European Countries for Autonomous Vehicle Testing: Trials in Luxembourg
Europe is taking an important step towards the spread of autonomous vehicles. Seventeen European countries, including Italy, along with the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport, have signed a joint declaration that paves the way for a new phase of international testing. At the heart of the initiative is Luxembourg, chosen as one of the main testing grounds for trialing driverless technologies in real conditions.
So far, one of the main obstacles to the development of autonomous mobility on the continent has been the regulatory differences among member states. A vehicle licensed in one country could not operate across borders due to differing rules regarding homologation, safety, and legal liability. The new agreement aims to reduce these barriers through coordinated procedures and shared criteria.
Among the primary objectives are the harmonization of test authorizations, simplification of bureaucratic processes for involved companies, and greater interoperability of digital infrastructures. Future autonomous cars will require constant communication with the surrounding environment via advanced communication networks, smart signage, and V2X systems.
Testing for autonomous cars will take place in Luxembourg. Alongside the European initiative, Luxembourg will host a concrete project developed by three major companies in the sector. The mobility platform Bolt, automaker Stellantis, and the autonomous driving specialist Pony.ai will collaborate to create a "Living Lab," an open-air laboratory to test level 4 autonomous vehicles.
In the project, Stellantis will provide a van based on its platform designed for advanced autonomous driving, while Pony.ai will integrate the artificial intelligence system capable of fully managing the vehicle. Bolt will contribute its expertise in shared mobility and fleet management. The initial phase will serve to verify the safety of the vehicles concerning passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. Subsequently, reliability, performance, and regulatory compliance will be assessed in real traffic scenarios. The central geographic location of Luxembourg and its favorable approach to innovation have favored the country's selection as the testing site.
