Windows 11 PCs Crashing: But the Blame Lies with Dell and HP, Not Microsoft

An outbreak of system crashes and continuous reboots has suddenly compromised the operation of thousands of Windows 11 PCs, just as the usual June Patch Tuesday was anticipated. However, telemetry has exonerated Microsoft from initial accusations, pointing the finger at software and firmware updates released independently by giants Dell and HP.

For owners of Dell hardware, the main source of these instabilities traces back to a faulty update of the proprietary suite Dell SupportAssist Remediation. Version 5.5.16.0 of this recovery tool caused a critical kernel error, manifesting as the infamous Blue Screen of Death. Dell systems from the XPS, Alienware, and Latitude lines were affected by an error code "critical process died" every 30 minutes, trapping machines in endless cycles of crashing and rebooting. Since the tool operates in the background as a system-level component, many users were unaware that it was Dell's utility causing such instability. The company then released an emergency hotfix, version 5.5.16.1.

Crashes and Reboots on Dell and HP Systems: Solutions and Emergency Workarounds

Simultaneously, IT administrators managing corporate networks had to face a infrastructure disaster caused by HP. A series of BIOS updates, rolled out on enterprise-grade HP EliteBook, ProBook, and ZBook workstations, abruptly interrupted communication with the local Trusted Platform Modules (TPM). This unexpected firmware discrepancy prevented the system from correctly verifying its boot status, triggering recursive BitLocker recovery cycles. As a result, the platforms could not process the new Secure Boot keys from Microsoft for 2023. The failure coincided with the broader transition of Microsoft’s Secure Boot certificate, turning a routine update into a widespread corporate fleet block. To mitigate the risk of further widespread failures before the rollout of Microsoft updates, targeted solutions have been proposed: in the case of the Dell SupportAssist issue, completely uninstalling the software or manually applying hotfix 5.5.16.1 resolved the crashes. Alternatively, administrators manually disabled the problematic service via elevated command prompts. For affected HP fleets, administrators were forced to suspend all scheduled endpoint updates until emergency BIOS revisions could be flashed or BitLocker protection could be suspended.

This dual crisis, orchestrated by two of the largest PC manufacturers, serves as a stern warning: although Windows 11 is often pointed to as the primary culprit for system instability, the true source of error sometimes lies in the suboptimized software ecosystems that operate silently in the background.
