WhatsApp Announces End of Support for Outdated iOS Versions

WhatsApp has announced an important change that will affect iPhone users in the coming years, setting a new minimum requirement for app usage. Starting from November 30, 2026, the service will no longer be compatible with devices running iOS versions earlier than 15.5.

This change will affect all users still on operating systems such as iOS 15.0, 15.1, 15.2, 15.3, or 15.4, who will need to upgrade to continue using WhatsApp without interruptions. The same rule will also apply to WhatsApp Business, which shares the same technological foundation as the main app.

According to the information released, most users should not be forced to change devices, as iPhones compatible with iOS 15 also support later updates like iOS 15.5. The update, therefore, should consist mainly of a simple software installation through the device settings.

WhatsApp's Strategy on iOS

This decision is part of a broader strategy to evolve the service. WhatsApp has explained that maintaining support for very outdated system versions requires many technical resources and limits the development of new features. The latest versions of iOS offer tools and programming interfaces that allow for more advanced improvements and reduce compatibility issues.

Moreover, the presence of obsolete operating systems can increase complexity in managing bugs and slow down the overall optimization of the app. Focusing on the most used versions, therefore, allows for improved stability and performance. The company is already sending notifications to users to invite them to update the operating system in advance, to avoid any disruptions by the deadline.

Business users are also encouraged to pay particular attention to the deadline to avoid interruptions in work communications. To continue using the service without issues, it is sufficient to check for available updates in the device settings under the software update section.
