Wizz Air does not follow Ryanair's example: Starlink connectivity on board by 2027 for the entire fleet
Wizz Air has announced a plan to introduce Starlink satellite connectivity on board its aircraft starting in 2027, becoming the first European ultra-low-cost airline to leverage technology developed by SpaceX to provide internet access during flights on a large scale.
This initiative represents a significant step in the evolution of digital services in air transport. For many years, in-flight connectivity has been considered a premium service, often reserved for traditional airlines or the more expensive travel classes. With this choice, Wizz Air aims to extend access to high-performance internet connectivity to passengers in the low-cost segment.

According to the company, the installation program will begin in 2027 and will progressively involve the fleet. The goal is to equip all new-generation aircraft with Starlink technology, ensuring a uniform experience regardless of the route operated.
The Starlink satellite network uses a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, a configuration that significantly reduces latency compared to traditional geostationary satellite solutions. This approach allows for more responsive connections and high speeds even during operational flight phases, paving the way for services such as instant messaging, web browsing, video conferencing, and streaming.
Ian Malin, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air, emphasized that the company's philosophy has always been focused on making services and opportunities accessible to an increasing number of people. In this context, the availability of a reliable connection on board is considered a natural extension of the low-cost offering, without forcing passengers to choose between low fares and access to digital services.
SpaceX has also highlighted the strategic value of the agreement. Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales, stated that the platform has been designed precisely to ensure continuous and reliable connectivity for passengers and crews throughout all phases of travel.
Wizz Air's adoption of Starlink fits into a growing trend in the commercial aviation sector: Musk's company has signed agreements with several airlines, yet Ryanair, the quintessential low-cost airline, is currently not among them. According to the company, short routes and fuel consumption make Starlink disadvantageous. Oh, and of course, it should not be forgotten that there is no love lost between Musk and CEO Michael O'Leary.
