Valve Drastically Increases Prices of Steam Deck OLED: Nearly €1000
Valve has announced a significant price increase for the Steam Deck OLED, the popular handheld gaming PC that has been a benchmark product in the industry since its launch in 2023. The 512GB OLED model is now sold at €779, while the 1TB version reaches €919. These hikes represent substantial increases compared to previous prices: the 512GB model cost €569, while the 1TB was available for €679. Increases of €210 and €240, respectively.
According to Valve, the price increases are mainly due to the rising costs of memory and storage, along with the logistical challenges that are affecting the entire technology industry. The company clarified that the Steam Deck has not undergone any hardware modifications, and the new pricing simply reflects the current economic context and component costs.
In recent months, there have been signs of difficulties in the production chain. In February, the Steam Deck OLED began to experience availability issues due to a shortage of components. Until today, the device was considered one of the best value-for-money solutions in the portable gaming PC market, especially during a time characterized by a decrease in affordable gaming laptop offerings.
Additional Details on the Steam Deck OLED Price Increase
With these new prices, competing devices such as the Lenovo Legion Go 2, sold for €1,679, and the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally X, offered at €999.99, suddenly seem less expensive than before. Even the ASUS ROG Xbox Ally, which maintains a price of €599.99 despite some technical issues, could become more appealing to consumers' eyes.
Valve has also confirmed that the increase in memory and storage costs is influencing other future projects of the company, such as the Steam Machine PC and the Steam Frame VR headset, both of which have been postponed. In the meantime, the company has still launched the new Steam Controller.
The price increase of the Steam Deck OLED follows a trend already seen in the gaming sector: Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have also recently raised the prices of their consoles.
