IT Wallet Becomes More Accessible: 200 Documents on the Way

IT Wallet is one of the successful cases of digitization in the public administration (PA) in Italy and beyond. It was among the first official wallets developed in Europe that are compatible with documents such as identity cards, driving licenses, electoral cards, and more. Soon, the application - which has surpassed the threshold of 10 million users - will be updated to support additional documents, totaling around 200 types.
IT Wallet: 10 Million Users and 200 New Documents Coming Soon
Currently, about 10 million people have uploaded a total of over 17.3 million documents onto the IT Wallet app. As of today, it is possible to digitize certain types of documents, such as identity cards, driving licenses, health cards, and European disability cards, but soon the list will expand significantly.
In upcoming versions of the app, users will be able to upload:
- academic qualifications,
- ISEE certifications,
- residency certificates,
- electoral cards,
- badges for public employees.
Additionally, certificates of school attendance, social and work records will also be available.
A government amendment also provides for the extension of IT Wallet to minors, provided they are at least 14 years old. In these cases, parental consent will not be necessary. However, it will be essential to obtain specific documents as well as to use certain services.
CieID and SPID: The Digital Identities
IT Wallet is a wallet that allows users to store a range of documents in digital format, so they can be shown to authorities in case of a check. Currently, it is already possible to move around Italy without carrying a physical identity card or driving license: if stopped for a check, it is sufficient to show the digitized version of the document. This approach will be extended throughout Europe in the future, and physical documents will not need to be carried even for air travel, at least within the Schengen area.
As for access to digital public administration services, Italian citizens have two options available: CieID and SPID. The latter is a system that will be dismantled in the coming years and already often requires a modest fee (usually less than 10 euros per year) for renewal. Considering that as of August 3 traditional identity cards will no longer be valid, and everyone will be obliged to switch to Cie, SPID will remain mainly a legacy structure for some time.
