Is Google About to Add Colored Lights to the Back of the Pixels? Pixel Glow Incoming
The release of the fourth beta of Android 17 has brought to light technical details suggesting a unique hardware direction for the next generation of Google smartphones. Although the operating system's development phase is now well advanced, changes "under the hood" continue to reveal substantial hints about what we will see with the Pixel 11 series, which has not yet been officially announced by Google.
At the center of attention is a new feature called Pixel Glow, a system of notifications and visual feedback designed to change the aesthetics and interaction with the device when it's placed face down on a surface.
Traces of this technology had already appeared in Beta 2 under the codename "Orbit," generally described as luminous animations. With Beta 4, the picture has become much clearer: Google has officially renamed the feature to Pixel Glow, incorporating code strings that explain its operation and, importantly, the technical requirements. This is not merely an evolution of the current Flash Notifications introduced with Android 14 (which utilize the camera flash or screen illumination), but rather a dedicated system that requires the device to have specific "hardware lights".
Pixel Glow: Luminous Notifications Come Back to the Forefront in Android 17
The system is designed to offer a "subtle" visual feedback (a term that recurs several times in the system strings) using light and color to inform the user without the need to lift the smartphone. Two main areas of application have been identified in the configuration menus: managing calls from favorite contacts and interacting with the AI Gemini. Regarding the voice assistant, the integration of physical lights could replicate the colorful "rainbow" animation that already characterizes Gemini’s software interface during listening or processing responses. This would enable a more intuitive hands-free interaction mode, providing an immediate signal of the assistant's status even when the display is not visible. The setup will allow users to selectively enable or disable these effects, which Google describes as a method to stay informed discreetly.
The software requirement for dedicated hardware lights opens an interesting debate about the design of future Pixel 11 devices. The leaked CAD renders so far have not shown obvious light elements on the rear panel, except for the traditional flash module. However, the structure of Google's camera bar provides the necessary space to hide LED strips or matrices of bright pixels that are not visible when turned off.
It remains to be seen whether this feature will remain exclusive to the 11 series or if Android 17 will allow third-party manufacturers to implement similar solutions utilizing the new system APIs.
