Linux on Par with Windows in Gaming: With Proton 11, Valve Nearly Closes the Gap with Microsoft's OS

Valve has updated its compatibility layer, now providing a gaming experience on Linux comparable to that on Windows. With Proton 11.0 Beta 1, the company has introduced several fundamental changes that significantly improve support for DirectX-based games on Linux and SteamOS.

The most notable change involves the transition to Wine 11, which now serves as the foundation for the entire stack. This update allows for more efficient management of Windows system calls, yielding concrete benefits in game execution. In particular, support for NTSync debuts, which replicates the synchronization behavior of Windows NT directly in the Linux kernel. The result is a reduction in CPU load and greater frame-time stability, a critical element in modern DirectX titles that are heavily geared towards multi-threaded loads.

On the compatibility front, Proton 11 further expands the catalog of executable titles. Several games that required Proton Experimental are now functional in the main version. These include Gothic 1 Classic, Deadly Premonition, Metal Gear Survive, Warhammer: Vermintide 2, and various historical entries from the Resident Evil and Dino Crisis series.

Valve has also addressed issues related to launchers, with dedicated fixes for titles using platforms such as EA App, Rockstar Launcher, and REDLauncher. These modifications improve overall stability and resolve incompatibilities that previously prevented some games from launching.

Additionally, Proton 11 integrates DXVK 2.78 and updates the components of VKD3D-Proton, providing tangible benefits in managing graphics APIs from DirectX 9 to DirectX 12. This update directly impacts the quality of the experience by reducing graphical artifacts and improving overall smoothness.

Once the final version is released, Proton 11 will address some of the most significant known issues and solidify Linux's support as a viable alternative to Windows even in the gaming realm. For more details and the complete changelog, we refer you to the GitHub page.
