GoPro Announces the MISSION 1 Line with Three Models Designed for Professionals

In the past, we have written about the issues that have been afflicting GoPro, with increasingly fierce competition and a business model that is no longer sustainable. To try to change the situation, the company has announced a new line of products designed for professionals or advanced content creators, moving away from the action cameras we have come to know over the years.

The new MISSION 1 cameras are aimed at the premium segment of digital imaging. A line of compact cinematic cameras designed for directors, filmmakers, and creators who need high performance in an extremely robust and portable body. They have been described as "the pinnacle of performance for cost-effective compact cinema cameras."

Nicholas Woodman (founder and CEO of GoPro) stated, "The MISSION 1 series represents the pinnacle of performance for cost-effective compact cinema cameras. Our most demanding professional customers have been asking us for this line of cameras for years, and we have finally managed to meet their needs. The MISSION 1 series is designed to withstand the most extreme conditions and come out unscathed, and it is in such demanding situations that our customers will put it to the test. The footage will be incredible."

At the core of this series is a new 1" sensor with a resolution of 50 MPixels, while images are processed by the GP3 processor, made with a 5 nm manufacturing process that also integrates a Neural Processing Unit (NPU). There are also 13 capture modes optimized for various uses, ranging from underwater shooting to stabilization and subject tracking. This solution is developed to ensure image quality, battery life, and thermal management that aim for the top of the category.

GoPro presented three models simultaneously called: MISSION 1 PRO, MISSION 1 PRO ILS, and MISSION 1.

GoPro and the New MISSION 1 Cameras

The first model is the GoPro MISSION 1 PRO, the most advanced camera in the series. Inside, it features a 1" sensor with a resolution of 50 MPixels with 1.6 μm pixels, allowing for the use of pixel-binning techniques to achieve sizes of 3.2 μm (Quad Bayer mode). The model allows for up to 14 stops of dynamic range with the GP3 processor handling the processing.

On the video front, the MISSION 1 PRO can record up to 8K60 as well as 4K240 and 1080p960 in 16:9 format, along with Open Gate 8K30 and 4K120 recording. These features position it at the top of the category in terms of frame rates and slow-motion speed. The camera is waterproof up to 20 meters without a housing, features a new 14% larger OLED display, and offers a native field of view of 159°. There are also 4 microphones for optimized stereo recording and wind noise reduction.

Another model is the GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS. This camera shares the sensor and processor with the PRO model mentioned above but introduces a revolutionary element for GoPro: an interchangeable Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens mount. This choice opens the door to a lens ecosystem, from telephoto to macro, making the ILS a versatile camera while maintaining the brand's typical robustness.

The HyperSmooth stabilization is also included, which works with any straight fixed focal lens. According to the manufacturer, this is the smallest, rugged, and most versatile high-speed camera in the world, designed for professional productions that require complete flexibility.

The last model, aimed at beginners, is the GoPro MISSION 1, which retains the same 50 MPixel sensor and photo quality as the PRO but with lower frame rates for those who do not feel the need to push technology further while also saving on the price. This model supports 8K30, 4K120, and 1080p240 in 16:9, along with Open Gate 4K120 mode.

With the introduction of the MISSION 1 line, GoPro has also launched a series of additional accessories. These include the Wireless Mic System, the redesigned Media Mod, the Enduro 2 battery, the Point-and-Shoot grip, the Light Mod 2, the Volta 2, and various ND filters.

According to the manufacturer, the battery guarantees a runtime of over 5 hours at 1080p30 and 3 hours of recording at 4K30.

GoPro has announced that the MISSION 1 PRO, MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, and MISSION 1 will be available from May 28, while the MISSION 1 ILS and MISSION 1 Creator Edition models will arrive in the third quarter of 2026.
