HMD has expanded its offering of traditional mobile phones by announcing the new Nokia 123 Shield. The company positions the device as the most accessible solution in its catalog equipped with protection against water and dust, specifically targeting those who work in outdoor environments or those in need of a backup phone without frills.
While a formal global retail price has yet to be announced, initial appearances at authorized retailers in Bulgaria and Greece indicate a purchase cost between €35 and €40. This is a modest amount considering the structural design intended to withstand stresses and weather conditions.
The external design prioritizes functionality and ease of use. The body features plastic inserts with a rough finish along the side edges to ensure a firm grip even with wet hands or gloves. At the bottom, there is a rubber flap that protects the connectors from sand, dirt, and water infiltration: once lifted, it provides access to the 3.5 mm audio jack and the USB-C port for charging. The overall weight is around 108 grams and the color options include green and purple.
Essential Technical Specifications and the Limitations of 2G Network
The internal hardware reflects the minimal nature of the phone. Software management is handled by the S30+ operating system, run by a Unisoc SC6531E processor. The memory includes 4 MB of RAM and 4 MB of internal storage. Those wishing to play audio files or store content must use a MicroSD expansion card, supported up to a maximum of 32 GB. The front display features a 2.4-inch panel with QVGA resolution, while a 0.1-megapixel (QVGA) camera module is located on the back, accompanied by a lighting LED.
The standout feature of the device remains its power management. The Nokia 123 Shield integrates a removable 1,750 mAh battery. According to the manufacturer, the battery allows for up to 27.9 hours of continuous conversation and guarantees a standby time of up to 19 days on a single charge.
Included accessories feature an FM radio capable of operating with both wired headphones and in wireless speaker mode. An integrated flashlight on the top of the frame is credited with higher brightness levels than those found in previous models of the Nokia 110 series.
As often seen in devices of this category, there remains the issue tied to telephone communications. The device only supports the second-generation network (2G on GSM 900 and 1800 bands) via a Dual Mini SIM configuration. Although the manufacturer confirms that it has optimized antenna management to improve reception, the gradual shutdown of 2G frequencies planned in many countries may limit the phone's operability in the coming years. On the sidelines of the presentation, some rumors indicate that HMD is also working on reviving a tile-based user interface reminiscent of the old Lumia series devices.
