Peak Design Rethinks the L-Bracket: The Tracker Hides Inside the Plate

Peak Design has introduced Field Bracket, a modular L-bracket system that the San Francisco company presents as a rethinking of an accessory that has remained virtually unchanged for years.

The launch took place on July 21 on Kickstarter, marking the company's seventeenth crowdfunding campaign, and in the first hours, it has already surpassed $200,000 raised.

The L-bracket is designed to quickly switch from horizontal to vertical shots on a tripod without moving the head: simply detach the camera, rotate it, and reattach it. Field Bracket starts from a specific base plate for each camera body, machined from recycled aluminum, to which a removable vertical element is added.

The mechanism that holds the system together is the Field Latch: a lever that allows you to attach or remove the vertical part in just a few seconds without tools, eliminating the need to always have an Allen wrench on hand. Once the mount is removed, Field Bracket remains as a low-profile base plate, compatible with Arca-Swiss heads without a separate plate. The vertical element can also be repositioned to make space for tethering cables, convenient in the studio with the camera remaining on the tripod.

A Tracker That Disappears in the Plate

The most interesting element is the Beacon Finder Tag, which Peak Design presents as the first locator designed to fit inside an Arca-compatible plate, so it doesn't hang bulky from the strap. The tag should work with both Apple Find My and Google Find Hub, uses a CR2025 battery claimed to last up to six months, and is certified IP67; however, Peak Design's press release only mentions integration with Apple's Find My.

Instead of the mount, an optional Cheese Plate can be installed, adding 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads and a cold shoe for lights, microphones, and monitors. For handheld shooting, a Hand Strap is provided. In all configurations, the company claims that the camera’s ports and controls remain accessible, and the system integrates with the Capture clip and the straps already in the catalog.

"The best photography accessories disappear into the workflow until they are needed," stated founder and CEO Peter Dering. "Rather than asking photographers to permanently mount features they use only occasionally, we built a system that transforms in seconds while remaining as rigid and reliable as a traditional L-bracket."

Field Bracket is available for selected Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, and Leica systems, with the Nikon versions covering the Z series up to the Z8. The retail price is $149.95, with accessories starting at $39.95; on Kickstarter, the bracket starts at $125 and the complete package at $199, pending retail distribution.
