Rocks, Sand, and a Lander: 50 Years Ago the First Images from Mars, Still Evoking Emotion
On July 20, 1976, a fundamental moment in space exploration was marked. The Viking 1 probe, landing on Martian soil, allowed humanity to observe the terrain of the Red Planet from its surface for the first time. This historic achievement, exactly fifty years ago, initiated a long legacy of discoveries, culminating today with data collected by the Curiosity rover on ancient dust storms.
The excitement was palpable at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. At 5:12 a.m. PDT (2 a.m. local time in Italy), the announcement "Touchdown, we have touchdown!" triggered enthusiasm among the mission controllers, confirming the lander's survival through the thin Martian atmosphere. Forty minutes later, the first images began to materialize on the screens, forming slowly line by line, from left to right.
Dr. Thomas Mutch, head of the Viking imaging team, described that moment as the emergence of "a fragment of electronic magic." On the black screen, light and dark areas began to take shape: rocks, sand, and, in one corner, one of the lander's landing skids, a "symbolic artifact" of the successful mission. The repeated refrain "It's incredible" marked the awareness of an unprecedented achievement.
The Long Legacy of Mars Exploration
Viking 1 did not operate alone. Six weeks later, its twin, Viking 2, joined the exploration, landing in a different Martian region. Simultaneously, two orbiters transported the landers to the Red Planet, continuing to collect data from space and serving as relays for communication with Earth, providing a broader picture of this new world.
This tradition of exploration, inaugurated by Viking 1, continues today with modern rovers. For example, the Curiosity rover has recently provided evidence of a tumultuous past on Mars. In an area nicknamed "Jawbone Canyon," its observations revealed traces of an ancient and particularly violent dust storm (see photo below).
The winds from this storm would have been so powerful that they pushed the sand into waves that, over time, solidified into wrinkled rock formations. This suggests that billions of years ago, Mars was radically different from the current arid desert, with a denser atmosphere, extensive rivers, and lakes. The image from Curiosity is from 2024, but the discovery and analysis of these formations have been detailed in a study published this year in the journal Geology.
The endeavor of Viking 1 provided the very first images of the Martian surface and sparked crucial studies on the soil, igniting the debate on the possibility that the planet ever hosted life. Its success, fifty years ago, paved the way for subsequent missions and allowed rovers like Curiosity and Perseverance to push the boundaries of our knowledge about Mars today.
