Centaurs Do Exist, at Least the Robotic Ones: The World's First Presented
At WAIC 2026 in Shanghai, Run Robotics showcased a robot that combines wheel mobility and humanoid manipulation. The Chinese company describes it as the world's first 'centaur' wheel-leg robot, a system designed to operate in complex environments where traditional robots face significant challenges.
The project stems from the union of a four-wheeled off-road chassis with a humanoid upper body equipped with robotic arms. This configuration allows the robot to move quickly across rough terrain while simultaneously executing physical tasks that require precision and dexterity.
The robot is inspired by the mythological figure of the centaur: a structure divided into two sections, with a mobile base and a human-like top. Unlike bipedal humanoid robots, the Run Robotics system leverages wheels to ensure greater speed and stability on uneven surfaces.
According to the company, over 95% of the robot's main components are produced in China. The system integrates artificial intelligence for autonomous navigation and management of operations in industrial and emergency contexts.
Run Robotics has indicated several use cases for the new robot. These include autonomous inspections, firefighting interventions, emergency rescue, mining operations, checks in oil facilities, and industrial maintenance.
The goal is to provide a platform capable of quickly reaching hard-to-access areas and to intervene with robotic arms in situations where human presence may be risky. The debut at WAIC 2026, held in Shanghai from July 17 to 20, attracted attention for its hybrid approach that combines speed, stability, and advanced operational capabilities.
