Capture One Brings Wireless Tethering to Mobile for Canon R1 and R5 II
Capture One has extended the second-generation wireless tethering for Canon cameras to Capture One Mobile, a feature that promises cable-free shots transferred at a speed that the company claims is "as fast as a physical connection." Available on desktop since the end of May, it now arrives on the mobile app with version 3.4.0.
The feature remains exclusive to only two camera bodies: the full-frame mirrorless Canon EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II, the flagship models of the latest EOS R series. For those who own other cameras, for now, they remain excluded.
The main issue that Capture One addresses is the delay between the shutter release and the usable file. With traditional wireless tethering, the company recalls, it could take 20 seconds or more per frame, a delay that kept photographers needing speed tethered to a cable. With the second generation, Capture One claims that an editable RAW file appears on the connected device in less than a second, ready for the full set of development tools of the application; the full-resolution version follows in the background, with all changes reflected identically.
The connection utilizes standard Wi-Fi on a local network and does not go through Bluetooth or the cloud. In the event of a lost signal, the company asserts, reconnection is automatic and without image loss, and all shots remain on the local network.
The Same Functions of the Desktop, Now on the Move
All the capabilities already available with wireless tethering on desktop are now present on mobile as well. The advantage that the company highlights is the freedom of movement: working without a cable allows changing angles and framing in the studio without physical constraints.
"The tethered workflow has been our home turf for over twenty years, and wireless has always been the one piece not fully up to professional work," says Capture One CEO Rafael Orta. "With the second generation, it is, and bringing it to mobile was the natural step, because it's what photographers have asked us for."
The innovation is already distributed: wireless tethering for Canon EOS R1 and R5 Mark II arrived in Capture One Pro 16.8 on desktop at the end of May, while the mobile version 3.4.0 has been available since July 15. The feature is accessible to all Capture One subscribers and those who have a perpetual license for version 16.8 or later.
