Windows 11: Smartphones and PCs are Becoming More Connected - What's in the Works
Microsoft has embarked on an important evolution for Windows 11, exploring the native integration of smartphone features. The goal is to move beyond the current approach that confines Phone Link tools to a separate application, incorporating them directly into the operating system's user experience for a smoother and more organic connection between PC and phone.
According to sources close to the company, Microsoft is testing various solutions. It is essential to emphasize that these ideas are currently in internal development: this means they may undergo changes, delays, or cancellations before any potential public release. The company will likely evaluate feedback from Insider users before committing to specific implementations.
Among the new features is an enhancement of the Phone Companion panel within the Start menu of Windows 11. This expansion would allow users to scroll through recent smartphone activities, such as messages and photos, directly from the menu without needing to open the Phone Link application. Hovering over an item would allow users to preview more details, such as a full message or a zoomed image, making access to phone information instantaneous.
Dedicated Interfaces and Advanced Synchronization for Windows 11
Another feature being tested is a dedicated flyout for the smartphone in the Windows 11 taskbar, located in the system tray (see photo above). A phone-shaped icon would automatically appear when the system detects a connected smartphone. Clicking on the icon would open a summary panel with device information and quick controls, elevating phone interaction to a deeper and more accessible level.
Among the hypothesized options for this flyout are the ability to activate
