No 'empty box': here's why the decision on Halo: Campaign Evolved will please purists

Halo Studios has confirmed that the physical version of Halo: Campaign Evolved will include a real disc inside the package, providing players with a tangible item to add to their collection. This choice comes at a time when many enthusiasts are expressing concern about the gradual disappearance of physical media in video games.

The news follows other recent industry controversies, including the decision of some physical editions of Grand Theft Auto VI to include only a digital code in the packaging, and rumors that Sony may stop producing physical games for PlayStation by 2028. These developments have fueled fears that the entire market may permanently shift towards digital.

In this context, Halo Studios wanted to clarify its position through a Q&A session published on Halo Waypoint. Senior community manager John Junyszek stated that by purchasing the Xbox or PlayStation version of the game from a physical retailer, players will receive a case with a disc, thus ensuring the presence of a tangible element.

Halo: Campaign Evolved will have a physical disc format. The release is approaching. The statement emphasizes the intent to maintain a connection to the traditional format, offering users not just the game but also a physical item to keep. This aspect has been explicitly cited as an added value for collectors.

In addition to confirmation of the format, it has been revealed that the game will also include a Machinima mode. Halo: Campaign Evolved will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC starting July 28, 2026. Those who pre-order the Premium or Collector's editions will gain early access to the game, with five days of early access beginning July 23.

The title represents a complete remake of the campaign from the first chapter of the series, Halo: Combat Evolved. The project will feature fully remastered graphics in 4K, classic weapons and vehicles from the saga, and new narrative content.
