For Sale: Withings BodyFit, Much More Than Just a Simple Scale

Withings BodyFit is now available in the European market, a new smart scale designed to offer a level of body composition analysis that aims to approach the professional tools used in clinical and sports settings. In recent years, this type of product has become increasingly smart, providing in-depth monitoring tools for physiological parameters.

The main technical innovation introduced by Withings BodyFit is represented by the 6-zone segmental analysis, made possible by a special hardware architecture that integrates a retractable handle equipped with dedicated sensors. Thanks to this solution, BodyFit is able to perform a complete body composition scan in about 10 seconds, collecting detailed information on the distribution of muscle mass and fat mass across different body segments.

The technological heart of BodyFit is constituted by the BIS (Bioelectrical Impedance Spectroscopy) platform, an evolved version of the traditional bioimpedance technologies adopted by many smart scales available in the market: Withings uses a measurement at 13 different frequencies reaching up to 800 kHz. The goal is to improve the system's ability to distinguish various biological tissues and provide a more accurate estimate of body parameters.

The hardware features a total of eight electrodes: four integrated into the base and four located in the removable handle. This configuration allows for the creation of multiple electrical pathways through the body, obtaining much more detailed information compared to traditional scales that limit measurement to the lower limbs.

According to the data provided by the company, the technology has been validated against the DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) method, considered one of the clinical references for body composition analysis. The declared results speak of a correlation of up to 99% for fat mass and up to 98% for muscle mass.

In BodyFit, the monitoring of segmental fat and muscle distribution in six different areas of the body has been implemented, providing information that can be particularly useful for both athletes and those on weight loss journeys. A weight reduction can come from a decrease in fat mass but also from a loss of muscle mass, a condition generally undesirable especially in the long term.

Through segmental analysis, the system can highlight any imbalances between the right and left sides of the body, monitor the effects of specific training programs, and verify how physiological changes distribute over time.

With each measurement, BodyFit is capable of collecting over 40 different physiological and biometric data. The software ecosystem developed by Withings analyzes this information through the proprietary app, building a personal historical record over time that allows for the identification of trends and variations often difficult to capture through sporadic observations.

One of the distinguishing elements of the system is the automation of the analysis. The user does not need to manually enter information related to diet: the platform automatically processes estimates on caloric balance and generates suggestions based on habits detected over time.

Withings BodyFit is available in Europe and the UK at a recommended price of €249.99: further technical features, along with the option for direct purchase, can be accessed from the company's website at this address.
