Amazon Challenges AI Chips: Proprietary Semiconductors for Echo and Fire TV

Amazon is strengthening its strategy in the artificial intelligence sector by investing in the development of internally designed chips for some of its most important consumer devices. This was confirmed by Panos Panay, head of the Devices & Services division, during an interview with CNBC, where he outlined the company's approach to next-generation hardware.

According to Panay, Amazon is entirely designing the semiconductors for products considered strategic in-house. These include devices such as Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, and Fire TV, in which proprietary chips allow for tighter integration between hardware and software.

Last October, the company unveiled the AZ3 and AZ3 Pro processors, developed to run artificial intelligence models directly on the device without constantly relying on the cloud. This solution is considered advantageous as it allows for faster response times and greater protection of user data.

Controlling the entire platform is crucial Panay explained that controlling the entire hardware platform is a fundamental element in providing a home experience based on artificial intelligence while maintaining high levels of security. Nevertheless, Amazon will still continue to use chips produced by partner companies like Qualcomm when necessary. The evolution of semiconductors fits into the broader strategy dedicated to Alexa+, the new version of the digital assistant made available in the United States.

The service introduces advanced capabilities, allowing for a better understanding of the context of requests, managing more complex operations, and learning user habits. Thanks to Alexa+, Amazon also aims to connect the entire ecosystem of Echo devices, Fire TV, Ring doorbells, and other products in its range more effectively.

Speaking about future prospects, Panay emphasized that the market for AI-based devices is still in its early stages, and no one can say with certainty what the winning format will be. He also revealed that numerous prototypes are already being tested in the company's labs. Among the projects in development is a new family of portable devices intended to accompany the user throughout the day.
