Smart Glasses in School: The Number of Students Using Them to Cheat on Exams is Rising

Smart glasses equipped with artificial intelligence are emerging as a new challenge for the education sector.

According to CNN, students from various countries have started using these devices to obtain assistance during exams, raising significant concerns among schools, universities, and educational authorities.

The phenomenon appears particularly delicate in East Asia, where admission test results can decisively influence students' academic and professional futures. For this reason, several school systems are introducing increasingly stringent checks to limit potential abuses.

In China, during the traditional national university entrance exam, taken each year by over ten million candidates, authorities have mandated mandatory checks on all glasses worn by participants. The aim is to identify any hidden technological devices that could facilitate dishonest behavior.

Will smart glasses in schools become a problem? The issue has also become central in the United Kingdom. The head of the organization overseeing exams in England recently emphasized how smart glasses and connected earbuds can represent an increasing risk to the integrity of the tests.

Similar situations have arisen in South Korea, where the first official cases of cheating via AI glasses have been recorded. In Taiwan, a university has decided to review regulations and operational procedures after discovering a student using this type of technology during an exam.

According to Thomas Corbin, a lecturer at Deakin University in Australia and a researcher specializing in the use of smart devices in academic assessments, known incidents may only represent a small part of the actual phenomenon. In his view, for each reported case, there could be many more that go undetected. Experts also observe that the evolution of artificial intelligence is making these devices increasingly smaller, discreet, and capable of functioning autonomously thanks to integrated connectivity.
