SanDisk Optimus Expands with New SSDs Certified for PlayStation 5 and ROG Xbox Ally

As we reported in previous months, SanDisk has initiated a restructuring of its consumer storage offerings by retiring the WD_BLACK and WD Blue brands for NVMe SSDs in favor of the new SanDisk Optimus family.

With this reorganization, the company has redefined its catalog, focusing on a unified nomenclature for products aimed at gamers, creators, and professionals. Now, the range is further expanded with two new models dedicated to gaming on consoles and portable devices.

The main novelties are represented by the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 850P SSD for PlayStation 5 and the SanDisk Optimus GX 7100X, intended for ROG Xbox Ally, ROG Xbox Ally X, and Windows PCs. Both units use PCIe 4.0 NVMe interface and have been designed to meet the performance requirements required by the target platforms, offering high transfer speeds and capacities of up to several terabytes.

The Optimus GX PRO 850P model is officially licensed for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. The unit includes a heat sink specifically developed for the M.2 slot of Sony's consoles and features a custom design with the PlayStation logo. According to SanDisk, this configuration allows for immediate installation without concern for mechanical or thermal compatibility.

On a technical level, the SSD reaches sequential speeds of up to 7,300 MB/s in reading and 6,600 MB/s in writing for the 2TB and 4TB models, values that are fully compatible with Sony's requirements for expanding the console's internal storage. The maximum capacity reaches 8TB, allowing for the storage of a large library of games without the need for constant transfers between internal memory and external drives. The company also emphasizes that titles can be run directly from the additional SSD, exactly as specified by PlayStation 5.

Alongside the offering dedicated to the Sony ecosystem, the new SanDisk Optimus GX 7100X also debuts, specifically developed for the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X portable consoles, as well as for traditional Windows PCs. In this case, it is also a PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280 SSD, featuring sequential speeds of up to 7,250 MB/s in reading and 6,900 MB/s in writing for the 1TB and 2TB models.

One of the aspects most highlighted by the manufacturer is the presence of the official Microsoft license for ROG Xbox Ally, which certifies full integration with the Xbox experience on ASUS portable devices. The unit is also built using the new eighth-generation BiCS TLC 3D CBA NAND memory developed by SanDisk, a solution that aims to combine high performance with low power consumption, a particularly important feature for battery-powered notebooks and portable consoles.

The capacity goes up to 4TB, leaving room not only for installed games but also for future updates and downloadable content. The 2TB model also offers up to 1 million IOPS in random read and 1.4 million IOPS in random write, with a declared endurance of 1,200 TBW and a limited five-year warranty. Included in the package is also a month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

However, the expansion of the Optimus family is not limited to these two models. SanDisk also announces that the entire line is now available through its online store and at selected retailers. Among the flagship products is the SanDisk Optimus GX PRO 8100, one of the higher-end PCIe 5.0 units in the catalog, aimed at professionals, creators, and gamers working with AI applications or particularly intensive workloads. The Optimus GX PRO 850X, a high-performance PCIe 4.0 SSD with capacities of up to 8TB designed for gaming and content creation, is also still available.

The offering also includes Optimus GX 7100, designed for notebooks and portable consoles with an emphasis on energy efficiency, and Optimus GX 7100M, developed in the M.2 2230 format for devices such as Steam Deck, MSI Claw, Microsoft Surface-compatible devices, and some Dell laptops. Closing the overview is the SanDisk Optimus 5110, a solution primarily aimed at creators looking for a balance between performance and cost. This model will be available by the end of the year and aims to offer fast loading times for creative applications and greater storage space for high-resolution photos and videos.
