Leica SL3-P: the most advanced full frame in the history of the SL system
In 2015, the Leica SL system made its debut, which then underwent progressive evolution while maintaining a full-frame sensor at its core and a primarily professional use case. Various models have emerged over the years, such as the SL3-S, while just hours ago the latest camera in this series, the Leica SL3-P, was introduced.
Its design is intentionally understated: no red logo, black controls, and an entirely metal body (magnesium and aluminum) with an aesthetic cleanliness that recalls the tradition of the German brand while embracing a more operational and discreet identity. Built in Wetzlar, the new Leica SL3-P has an IP54 certification, ensuring protection against dust and splashes, making it suitable for the most demanding contexts, from motorsport to nature photography, from reportage to sporting events. The design philosophy is clear: to put the most advanced technology at the service of those who work with moving subjects, without betraying the tactile pleasure and image quality that have always characterized the SL system.
Renato Rappaini (Managing Director of Leica Camera Italy) stated, "With the Leica SL3-P, we present a camera capable of meeting the needs of those who today work with increasingly dynamic images in contexts that require speed, precision, and absolute reliability. From sports and nature photography to professional video production, the SL3-P offers extraordinary performance without sacrificing what is essential for us: image quality, ease of use, and an authentically Leica photographic experience. It is a camera designed to accompany professionals in the present and ready to face the creative challenges of the future."
Features of the new Leica SL3-P
The heart of the Leica SL3-P camera is a full frame 45.8-megapixel (44.9 million effective pixels) CMOS sensor, free of a low-pass filter to maximize sharpness, paired with the Leica Maestro IV processor. Optical stabilization on 5 axes providing up to 5 stops of compensation is also included, a concrete advantage in difficult lighting conditions and with moving subjects.
In terms of speed, the new camera reaches 40 frames per second at 12-bit with the electronic shutter and continuous autofocus active. Even at more moderate rates, it can hit 7 fps at 14-bit with autofocus and mechanical shutter, while the 8 GB buffer allows for long sequences in DNG (up to 1000 shots). The mechanical shutter can reach speeds of up to 1/8000”, while the electronic one peaks at 1/16000”, covering every operational need, with flash synchronization at 1/200”.
The hybrid autofocus system combines contrast detection, depth mapping, and phase detection across 819 points, with intelligent subject recognition spanning people (eye, face, body), animals, and vehicles. Response times are minimal: the viewfinder delay is only 0.005 seconds. The electronic viewfinder (EVF) offers a resolution of 5.76 million points with a magnification of 0.76x, alongside a 3.2” touchscreen monitor with 2.3 million points and a monochrome top display with 1.28”.
For video, options include recording up to an 8K resolution in oversampling (8064 x 5376 pixels, 3:2 format in MOV), supporting ProRes, H.265, and H.264, color space Rec. 709 and Rec. 2020 with L-Log and HLG. Recordings can occur on dual slots, SD UHS-II, and CFexpress Type B, ensuring maximum flexibility in every professional workflow.
Connectivity includes HDMI 2.1, USB-C 3.1 Gen2, dual-band Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth 5.0. The Leica FOTOS App allows rapid transfer, remote control, and OTA firmware updates. Integrated is also the Content Credentials (CAI) technology, which applies a digital signature to files to protect intellectual property. Native tethering for Lightroom Classic and Capture One completes an ecosystem designed for the demanding professional. The new Leica SL3-P camera is available starting today at a recommended price of 5,990 euros. The company also offers three lens kits: the version with camera body and Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/28-70 ASPH. lens priced at 6,990 euros, the one with Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/24-70 ASPH. lens priced at 7,490 euros, and finally the kit with two lenses, Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/24-70 ASPH. and Vario-Elmarit-SL 1:2.8/70-200 ASPH., priced at 9,790 euros.
