The memory crisis is felt: Microsoft launches two new Surfaces with 8 GB of RAM

Microsoft has updated its Surface range with several new features. Initially, the company launched the new generation with Intel Core Ultra 300 chips, aimed at business customers, and then presented variants with Snapdragon X2 chips (at very high prices). Now there are two further innovations, set to spark discussion due to Microsoft's choice to return to 8 GB of RAM.

Return of the Surfaces with 8 GB of RAM

Without any particular announcements, the company has further updated the range with the debut of 8 GB RAM variants of the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 13 (the entry-level variants of the Pro and Laptop lines). In both cases, the chip used is the first-generation Snapdragon X Plus and not one of the variants of the more recent Snapdragon X2. The presence of only 8 GB of RAM also results in the loss of Copilot+ PC status, and therefore the inability to leverage some AI features of the operating system.

Currently, these new entry-level versions are available in the United States, priced at $849 for the Surface Pro and $949 for the Surface Laptop. The 16 GB versions remain available on the market, representing the entry-level offering for the Italian market.

The launch of the 8 GB RAM variants is closely tied to the rising cost of components due to the memory crisis. In this way, Microsoft continues to market some Surface models with a price below $1,000.
