Octopus Energy Launches Nook, Its Range of Home Batteries
Octopus Energy has launched Nook, its first range of home batteries, with the declared aim of cutting energy bills for millions of European families. The announcement came at the Energy Tech Summit in London, the company's annual event.
The range includes two products designed for different needs.
Octopus Nook Cube is a plug-in battery with a capacity of 2 kWh, about the size of a shoebox, that connects to a standard power outlet and is managed from the Octopus app: designed for renters or apartment dwellers, it can be paired with other units to reach a total capacity of 10.5 kWh.
Octopus Nook Colossus, reserved for owners of independent homes, is a wall-mounted system to be installed by a specialized technician, available in sizes of 5 kWh and 10 kWh and expandable up to 30 kWh for larger homes. Both systems are compatible with solar panels and come with a 12-year warranty.
With this launch, Octopus becomes the first major British energy supplier to sell a proprietary line of batteries directly to its customers. The two batteries will be available to customers in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain starting next year, although the company has not yet disclosed prices or sales channels for individual markets.
In Italy, where Octopus Energy has been operating since 2022, the company has already surpassed 900,000 customers and plans investments of over one billion euros by 2030: Nook will therefore enter a market where the brand already has an established customer base.
So far, the benefits of home batteries have remained out of reach for renters: in the UK alone, this accounts for over 10 million households, according to data from the Office for National Statistics. Octopus Nook Cube, not requiring installation works, aims to overcome this limitation.
Batteries allow users to store energy when it costs less and consume it during peak hours, with estimated savings of hundreds of euros annually. The advantage can grow further by pairing Nook with one of Octopus' smart tariffs, which the company claims have already saved customers nearly a billion pounds in total.
"Home batteries are a brilliant technology and today represent one of the smartest ways to reduce energy bills," said Greg Jackson, founder and CEO of the Octopus Energy group. "Offing our batteries to customers is an important step in our mission to help people access the cheapest energy possible."
Octopus also links this initiative to the growing demand for storage systems, fueled by tensions in the Middle East and the resulting volatility in energy prices. In the UK, Spain, and France, the company has already installed nearly 26,000 systems combining solar and batteries.
At the same event, Octopus also announced Swaptopus, a joint venture with CATL to build a European network of hubs dedicated to the rapid replacement of electric truck batteries, aiming to eliminate long charging times in heavy transport. The first mega hubs in the UK are expected by 2027.
