Tamron 17-70mm F/2.8, the all-round zoom for APS-C also arrives for Nikon Z and Canon RF

Tamron has extended its 17-70mm F/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD (Model B070), a stabilized standard zoom for APS-C mirrorless cameras, to the Nikon Z and Canon RF mounts. The actual availability is set for July 2, with an Italian list price yet to be announced, but which should be around 749 equivalent dollars for both versions. This is not a new design: it is the same lens already available for Sony E since January 2021 and for Fujifilm X since July 2022, now adapted to the two missing systems.

The lens is of particular interest to photographers using the Canon system. The white-red company does not offer a native constant aperture F2.8 zoom dedicated to APS-C on the RF mount: thus, the Tamron joins Sigma's 18-50mm F2.8 and 10-18mm F2.8 as the third-party option with a constant aperture, and it is just the third Tamron lens available for that system. On Nikon Z, the scenario is different, since a native option already exists (the Z DX 16-50mm F2.8 VR), but the Tamron extends the focal length to telephoto up to 70 mm against Nikon's 50 mm, adding to a choice of over ten lenses from the brand already available for the mount.

Optical Features

The zoom range corresponds to a zoom ratio of 4.1x, which the manufacturer claims as a reference standard among constant aperture F2.8 zooms for APS-C (data updated as of May 2026). In terms of full-frame equivalent coverage, it is 25.5-105 mm on Nikon Z and 27.2-112 mm on Canon RF, due to the different crop factor of the RF APS-C sensor. The optical scheme consists of 16 elements in 12 groups, with two low dispersion (LD) lenses, two GM molded glass elements, and one hybrid aspherical element. It features VC stabilization, an RXD autofocus motor, focus breathing suppression, and a minimum focusing distance of 0.19 m at the wide angle (reproduction ratio up to 1:4.8).

On the construction front, the lens adopts a 9-blade diaphragm, a unified 67 mm filter thread, resistance to humidity, and fluorine coating on the front lens. The Canon RF version includes two physical selectors on the barrel for AF/MF and for activating stabilization; both variants accept firmware updates via TAMRON Lens Utility. In terms of dimensions, the Nikon Z version measures 121.3 mm and weighs 540 grams, while the Canon RF version measures 117.3 mm and weighs 530 grams. The official product page is already online on the Tamron website, with complete specifications for the two mounts.
