Google Releases Wear OS 7: Based on Android 17, Now Available on Pixel Watch

Google has launched the rollout of Wear OS 7, the latest incarnation of its smartwatch operating system based on Android 17. The update is intended for the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, and Pixel Watch 4 models (in Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE variants) and introduces significant system-level optimizations, particularly for power management, along with new features like Live Updates and advanced media controls, consolidating Google's vision for an interconnected device ecosystem.

The update installation is already available for users. You can start the download by going to your device settings (Settings > System > System Updates). To speed up the process, Google suggests disabling Bluetooth from connectivity preferences, thus forcing the use of Wi-Fi. It's important to note that the original Pixel Watch model is not included in this release, in line with the company's policy of three years of software support.

Upcoming Gemini Intelligence Features

One of the cornerstones of Wear OS 7 is the promise of greater battery life. Thanks to "deep system-level energy optimizations," Google has reported an up to 10% improvement in battery life compared to Wear OS 6. This enhancement is particularly relevant given the intensity of smartwatch usage: internal statistics reveal that over half of Wear OS users wear their device seven days a week, with the most active 10% using it for more than 23 hours a day.

On the features front, Live Updates have arrived. These allow users to monitor ongoing events directly from their wrist, such as sports scores, workout progress, or delivery statuses. A persistent icon will be visible at the bottom of the watch face and a tab at the top of the notification feed, providing real-time details with a simple tap and perfectly syncing with their Android smartphone.

Media control has also received a significant overhaul. The Remote Media Routing feature integrates into the system media player, allowing users to manage audio and video output devices directly from the smartwatch. Users can now quickly switch between Bluetooth headphones, Google Cast devices, smart displays, and speakers, eliminating the need to physically interact with their smartphone to change the playback destination.

Personal safety receives a high-profile boost with the integration of the Emergency Sharing feature, which connects to Loss of Pulse, Car Crash, and Fall Detection: in the event of a violent fall, loss of heartbeat, or serious car accident detected by the Pixel Phone or Watch, the system will automatically send notifications to predefined emergency contacts. The Pixel Watch 4, furthermore, boasts a "more robust and accurate" Raise to Talk activation, thanks to an optimized gesture model.

Looking to the future, Wear OS 7 lays the groundwork for the arrival of Gemini Intelligence features, expected "later this year" for "selected Wear OS 7 devices." Among these is Create My Widget, which will allow users to create customized dashboards on their wrist using simple natural language voice commands. Gemini will also enable multi-step automations, such as booking a table or ordering food, operating directly from the smartwatch.

The Gemini app on Wear OS 7 will receive a "Neural Expressive" redesign and will integrate Personal Intelligence, pulling data from connected Google apps (like Gmail and Docs) to provide contextual suggestions. Google also mentioned improved interoperability with other smart devices, such as the ability to view previews of photos taken with smart glasses arriving this fall directly on the watch display. It remains to be seen which specific devices will fully benefit from these advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
