The Social Reckoning: The Story of Facebook Returns to Cinema with First Trailer

After The Social Network, the rise and establishment of Facebook (now known as Meta) as a benchmark of the web, eventually becoming one of the "Big Tech" companies and one of the largest firms in the world, returns to cinema with The Social Reckoning, a new film by Aaron Sorkin. This is not a true sequel but a parallel work that follows a different phase of Facebook's global spread. The film was just teased with the first teaser trailer.

The Recent Past of Facebook in Cinema

The Social Reckoning will not tell the early years of the social network's birth, but will follow the developments of the scandal known as "The Facebook Files," which began as an investigation by the Wall Street Journal and, although it seems distant in time, dates back just a few years (2021).

Mark Zuckerberg will return as the protagonist, but he will no longer be portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg but by Jeremy Strong. The cast also includes Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison, as well as Wunmi Mosaku, Betty Gilpin, Billy Magnussen, and Bill Burr.

The film already has an official synopsis:

"A complementary work to The Social Network. The original screenplay by Aaron Sorkin is based on the events that led to the shocking investigation by the Wall Street Journal titled The Facebook Files. The film is inspired by the true story of Frances Haugen (Madison), a young Facebook engineer, who teams up with Jeff Horwitz (White), a journalist from the Wall Street Journal, embarking on a dangerous path that will ultimately lead to the disclosure of the social network's most closely guarded secrets."

The release date in cinemas is set for October 9.
