BYD Challenges Tesla with a $2 Billion Plan: 5-Minute Charging Coming to Europe

BYD has announced the launch of its European distribution plan for its Flash Charger, ultra-fast charging stations with which the Chinese manufacturer aims to solidify its market share in the Old Continent. The first pilot plants are already operational in Germany and the United Kingdom, but the stated goal is to install 3,000 charging stations by the end of 2027.

This is an operation with a significant economic impact. According to estimates from the Financial Times, each individual station incurs a cost of about 580,000 euros, bringing the multinational’s total investment to a figure close to 2 billion dollars. The infrastructural offensive aims to bridge the gap with the competition's network, as Tesla already boasts a strong presence with over 20,000 active Superchargers across Europe.

Nighttime Storage and Charging at 1,500 kW for the Denza Z9 GT

The main element of technical differentiation lies in the provided power. BYD's Flash Chargers reach 1,500 kW, a value three times higher than the 500 kW offered by Tesla's Supercharger V4. To address the issue of excessive stress on the local power grid (a similar peak absorption could destabilize urban distribution infrastructures), BYD has integrated a battery storage system within the stations themselves. The local storage modules will be replenished at a low speed during nighttime hours, when overall energy demand is lower, to then discharge maximum power to vehicles during the day.

Access to the Flash Chargers is guaranteed for any car equipped with a CCS standard connector, ensuring maximum interoperability. However, fully utilizing the five-minute charging technology is contingent on the vehicle's onboard architecture. Only BYD vehicles equipped with the new generation of Blade Battery can support the maximum energy peak.

Currently, the only model imported to Europe capable of utilizing this combination is the Denza Z9 GT, a vehicle positioned in the premium market segment with a price tag of 115,000 euros. In tests conducted on the new charging stations, the Chinese shooting brake managed to complete the charging cycle up to 70% in just five minutes, showcasing the potential of the 1,500 kW technology while awaiting compatibility to be extended to more accessible models in the range.
