SpaceX Announces AI1 Satellites Set to Become Space Data Centers for Artificial Intelligence

Just a few days after going public, SpaceX has announced some news particularly related to Artificial Intelligence, attributed also to the absorption of xAI in recent months (effectively becoming SpaceXAI). The most important news pertains to the satellites that will serve as the foundation for space data centers aimed at utilizing solar energy to power high-performance computers in low Earth orbit, which will then send data back to Earth.

The AI1 satellites will be the first generation and are expected to be launched in the coming months with Starship, once the vehicle becomes operational (alongside the launch of third-generation Starlink satellites). According to the specifications released, SpaceX’s AI1 satellites will have a peak computational power of 150 kW and an average computational power of 120 kW, and may mark a new turning point for Elon Musk's company.

Features of SpaceX's AI1 Satellites

The dimensions of the AI1 satellites, once fully deployed, will be quite impressive at 70 x 20 meters. A large radiator of 110 m² based on circulating coolant with multiple pumps (for redundancy) will be used for cooling. SpaceX has also designed shielding against micrometeoroids or space debris.

In general, according to the current available renderings, there will be a central body where racks with hardware will be positioned, while the cooling system will be routed in the middle. Solar panels will be placed on the sides, and the radiators will be positioned vertically, above and below the central body.

The large solar panels are expected to generate 150 kW or 250 W/m² and will be produced directly by SpaceX. According to Elon Musk, "an AI satellite is much simpler than a Starlink satellite. The AI satellite is essentially made up of many solar cells; laser links are still necessary, but there are not all the super complex antennas found on a Starlink satellite. The AI satellite is easier to design. It's bigger. Much of this technology has already been developed for Starlink V3 satellites."

Each Starship launch should enable the deployment of up to 50 AI1 satellites at a time. This should allow the constellation to grow quickly. According to past statements, there is talk of one million satellites in various orbits. A determining factor will be the launch cadence of the new heavy launch vehicle, which will dictate both the sustainability of the AI operations at SpaceX and other operations (from Starlink to space missions in general). The company's production capabilities are well known, and, as Musk specified, some technologies will already be implemented for other products (Starlink), such as data transfer through optical (laser) links.

The challenge is daunting, and the risk of not achieving the stated result is still high. However, SpaceX has accustomed us to a series of projects successfully completed, such as increasing launch cadence and the reusability of Falcon 9 rockets, Dragon and Crew Dragon capsules, and the implementation of the Starlink constellation. Now, with the money from the public offering, there may be further leeway for "unlikely" projects like this.
