Some American States Want to Block Paramount's Acquisition of Warner Bros

The acquisition of Warner Bros by Paramount, a deal worth $111 billion, is not yet finalized. As reported by Reuters, some American states are prepared to block the agreement by initiating a lawsuit to obtain a legal halt. Despite the offer being accepted, for antitrust reasons, the completion of the operation must be approved. This is not a foregone conclusion.

A Competition Issue

California Attorney General Rob Bonta clarified the situation, emphasizing:
"Further concentration in markets essential to the American economy does not benefit our economy, consumers, or competition. In fact, market concentration has led to rising prices, the loss of well-paying job opportunities, and less choice for consumers." According to the California Attorney, the operation "must undergo a thorough and comprehensive review."

Currently, the available information is limited. In addition to California, the state of New York and other American states would also be ready to intervene to block Paramount's acquisition of Warner Bros. According to Reuters, a complaint capable of initiating legal action to block the acquisition could arrive as soon as the coming weeks. Most likely, Paramount’s lawyers are already at work on a defensive strategy to support the completion of the deal.

It's worth noting that Paramount managed to outbid Netflix with an offer of $31 per share, for a total valuation of around $111 billion. Netflix, on the other hand, had stopped at $82.7 billion for the film studios and streaming activities of the company.
