Microsoft Budges: Windows 11 Search Can Finally Be Only Local
Microsoft is directly addressing the historical limitations of its system search by deciding to eliminate one of the main friction points in Windows 11. The search tool integrated into the taskbar, often criticized for the invasiveness of web results managed through Bing, will soon receive a dedicated toggle to completely exclude the web from system queries.
This marks a definitive shift for the Redmond company, which, for years, has forcefully integrated its search engine within the operating system. The new feature, revealed during a confidential meeting of the Windows Insider program and confirmed by Windows Latest's analysis of the preview builds, will allow users to configure the search to operate in an exclusively local mode.
Currently, the only way to eliminate web integration is to manually modify the Registry (navigating to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Policies > Microsoft > Windows), a complex and unnecessarily risky procedure for such a basic need.
Less Bing and More Performance: Search Can Be Local on Windows 11
The new toggle will disable not only Bing suggestions but also MSN content, integrations with Copilot, Rewards, and results from the Microsoft Store. This option will prevent the system from suggesting the installation of software not present on the local disk, cleaning up the interface from foreign or promotional elements.
In parallel with the optional removal of cloud components, Microsoft is introducing optimizations to accelerate the indexing of files with complex names. With the upcoming cumulative update in June, local search will be activated by typing just two characters, forcing the system to give absolute priority to persistent files on the hard disk (even when web search is active) rather than diverting the user to web servers.
Another notable technical innovation concerns the introduction of substring search. Until now, indexing required matching the initial characters of the file name. With the new implementation, the Windows 11 algorithm will be able to locate a document or image starting from any part of the name string, eliminating the limitations of the previous search engine and restoring centrality to the performance of the local file system.
