Guild Wars 3 is Official: ArenaNet Announces the New MMORPG, Beta Expected in 2027
Guild Wars 3 is Finally a Reality
After years of speculation fueled by the hiring at ArenaNet and increasing promotional activity around the franchise, the American studio took the stage at the Summer Game Fest to officially announce the next chapter of the historic MMORPG series.
According to the studio's director Colin Johanson during the presentation, Guild Wars 3 aims to represent an evolution of the MMO genre. The first trailer shown to the public highlighted some of the new solutions adopted by the team, including a greater emphasis on character mobility and environmental exploration. In one of the most significant sequences, the protagonist traverses a nearly vertical wall, suggesting a much more dynamic approach to movement compared to previous entries.
ArenaNet also describes the combat system as one of the main innovations of the project. The studio speaks of a unique MMORPG experience based on mechanics influenced by the concept of "momentum," implying that speed, inertia, and movement will play a central role in the gameplay dynamics. Although details are still limited, the setup seems to indicate a clear differentiation from the traditional structure of Guild Wars 2, just as the latter represented a significant evolution from the original Guild Wars.
The company has confirmed that the beta phase will be available in the fall of 2027, while it is already possible to register interest through the official channels of the game.
The announcement of the new chapter has inevitably raised questions about the future of Guild Wars 2, a title that continues to maintain an active community almost fourteen years after its launch. In a video blog released alongside the announcement, ArenaNet clarified that Guild Wars 3 will not mark the end of development for the previous games in the series. Johanson explained that the studio does not intend to replicate what happened during the transition from the first Guild Wars to the second chapter, when active support was progressively transferred to the new project. According to the studio head, if ArenaNet had chosen this strategy, they would have already stopped developing Guild Wars 2 long ago.
The signs of this approach are already visible. The current expansion of Guild Wars 2 has not yet completed its update cycle, while even the first Guild Wars has recently received new dungeons after years of reduced activity. The studio claims to have planned for a coexistence between the different iterations of the series for a long time.
In the short term, this will lead to a slowdown in the pace of updates for Guild Wars 2, with the team also focused on preparing for the launch of the new title. ArenaNet has, however, teased some upcoming content, including optimization interventions, a revisiting of the Hall of Monuments system that will allow players to earn rewards usable in Guild Wars 3, and an updated version of the historic battle against Zhaitan. Once Guild Wars 3 is released, Guild Wars 2 will continue to receive new expansions and updates.
