Virtua Fighter Has Returned and It's Not the Game You Expected: Here's What Really Changes
After months of silence, during which the community could only observe a teaser trailer and some context-free gameplay snippets, Sega and RGG Studio have finally unveiled their new project tied to the Virtua Fighter saga.
During the Summer Game Fest Live 2026, the full trailer for Virtua Fighter Crossroads was presented, accompanied by a dedicated showcase where Creative Director Riichiro Yamada outlined the main features of the title. The launch window is set for 2027, with no specific date or official list of platforms yet, although it’s reasonable to expect availability on PC (Steam), PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The studio known for the Yakuza series has chosen a radically different approach compared to the tradition of the franchise. Yamada described Virtua Fighter Crossroads as a “fighting adventure” experience, a formula that combines a single-player narrative campaign with the series' hand-to-hand combat system.
This is not, therefore, a pure fighting game, but a title that integrates elements of action-adventure and an action RPG structure, stylistically approaching RGG Studio's production philosophy already seen in Yakuza and Like a Dragon.
The shown trailer is primarily narrative-oriented rather than focused on actual gameplay, but it provides an introduction to the game world and the new protagonist. The visible combat sequences confirm that close-quarters combat mechanics remain at the core of the experience, with animations aiming for a marked and realistic physical impact.
The game is set in Vilasapara, a fictional city in Southeast Asia under the control of a powerful local criminal organization and characterized by widespread corruption. The urban aesthetic faithfully recalls the typical neighborhoods of the geographic area, with street vendors on the sidewalks and dining establishments furnished with characteristic molded plastic chairs. This stylistic choice reflects RGG Studio's usual approach to environment building, always attentive to cultural verisimilitude.
Structurally, Virtua Fighter Crossroads is conceived as an anthology centered around four main characters. The face of the game is Cielo Salinas, who in this iteration takes the place of Akira Yuki as the flagship character of the series. As in the Yakuza titles, progression will be enriched by a significant number of side missions, demonstrating the intention to build a dense game world with side content.
Fights within the story mode will not be limited to the one-on-one clashes typical of the series: the title will introduce multiple combat situations, where the protagonist will have to face several opponents simultaneously. This mechanic, new for Virtua Fighter, further brings the title closer to the rhythms of action-adventure.
The VS mode, however, remains present and retains the simple and direct combat mechanics that have historically characterized the series, including higher-damage combos. RGG Studio seems to want to maintain a dual approach.
