The Apocalypse Data Center Has Been Scaled Down, But It Is Still Frightening
Kevin O'Leary, well-known face of Shark Tank, has succumbed to mounting pressures, agreeing to halve the size of his controversial data center, Project Stratos, in Utah. The facility, initially planned to cover a colossal area of 160 square kilometers, will be reduced by about half, bringing its extent to around 80 square kilometers. This strategic move is driven by the opposition of residents, activists, and particularly a strong request from the President of the Utah Senate, J. Stuart Adams.
O'Leary's decision, communicated through a letter to Adams, follows a call from the President who had explicitly requested a 75% reduction of the project, reducing it to "only" 40 square kilometers. Adams had also urged the implementation of technologies aimed at minimizing water consumption and diverting excess water to the Great Salt Lake, a constantly shrinking basin, emblematic of the local water crisis.
Project Stratos: Forced Scaling Down, But the Scale Remains Gigantic
The project, located in a sensitive area such as the Locomotive Springs Waterfowl Management Area, is under the spotlight for its potential environmental impact. O'Leary has agreed to remove an additional 2.5 square kilometers in the northeast section near the highway, promising to "preserve most of the remaining area as open space".
Despite this significant cut, Project Stratos will still be a giant. With approximately 80 square kilometers, its footprint will still be larger than all of Manhattan. This scale demands critical reflection on the impact of such infrastructures. Data centers, even those much smaller in size, are known for their considerable energy demands, as well as the environmental impact related to heat production and resource consumption. The issue of water consumption is particularly pressing for Project Stratos, given the context of severe drought afflicting the Great Salt Lake.
The matter of Project Stratos clearly forms part of the broader debate on balancing technological development (especially the exponential expansion of data centers and AI) and environmental sustainability. Adams' request to integrate technologies to reduce water consumption and divert it to the lake highlights the urgency for strategies of water efficiency and responsible resource management even in high-tech projects. The case of O'Leary and Project Stratos serves as an exemplary instance of the challenges awaiting the tech industry in mitigating its ecological footprint, especially when it comes to hyperscale facilities in delicate environmental contexts.
