QNAP Announces QuTS hero h6.0: The ZFS Operating System Enriched with New Features, Including AI

QNAP has announced the launch of the new generation of its enterprise-level operating system: QuTS hero h6.0 brings several innovations including configurations for high availability, immutable snapshots, security improvements, data tiering (management of data tiering), as well as integrations with AI services.

QuTS hero stands out from the "normal" QTS version due to the inclusion of the ZFS file system, developed by Sun Microsystems and known for being extremely robust and reliable. For this reason, QNAP proposes QuTS hero as the operating system for business environments where losing data is simply not an option.

QuTS hero h6.0 introduces the ability to configure clusters for high availability thanks to the High Availability Manager with new models: two devices can be configured so that one acts as a backup that takes control if the main one fails or has issues.

Additionally, the new version of the operating system allows the creation of immutable snapshots, enabling a "snapshot" of data that cannot be changed by anyone, not even system administrators, protecting it from ransomware damage. It also introduces cryptographic key management through Key Manager Server to control encryption in a centralized manner.

On the security front, Secure Boot, FIDO2 passkeys, ransomware detection within Malware Remover through the new Ransomware Guard feature, and IP access filtering are now available. The permission system has also been revised, with a new interface promising to simplify management.

After its arrival on QTS, Qtier hero is now available for QuTS hero; this feature allows data to be divided into tiers (hot, warm, and cold) to distinguish between different devices based on access frequency or other criteria. This way, for example, frequently used files can be kept on NAS with SSDs, while long-term backup copies can be stored on NAS with hard disks.

Finally, QNAP has added AI-related features: it is now possible to use RAG Search, which uses open-source language models (such as DeepSeek, Gemma, Phi, and Mistral) on NAS equipped with GPUs to perform semantic searches directly on documents, as well as summaries and other functions, without the data ever leaving the corporate perimeter. MCP Assistant allows administrators to manage NAS using natural language commands directly from services like Claude Desktop, VS Code, Telegram, or n8n.
