App Store, Apple's study reveals: the store generated $1.4 trillion in 2025

A few days before the debut of WWDC 2026, Apple's annual event dedicated to developers, the company decided to flex its muscles by publishing the results of an independent study conducted by economists from Analysis Group. The presented data outlines a vertical growth for the entire App Store ecosystem, capable of generating a record figure of $1.4 trillion in total revenue and partner sales throughout 2025.

This business volume has nearly tripled compared to measurements taken in 2019, demonstrating a structural resilience that aims to disprove the criticisms of those who speak of stagnation in the mobile market. The most strategic data for defending Cupertino's image concerns the commissions applied to software creators. According to the report, on over 90% of this gigantic global revenue, developers did not pay any percentage to Apple.

The Boost from Artificial Intelligence and Ecosystem Boundaries

A necessary technical clarification, as the metric used in the study includes not only canonical digital transactions but also physical goods and services ordered through applications (like home deliveries, e-commerce, or transportation), areas where the Cupertino giant does not apply any direct withholding on transactions.

The true accelerator of the past year has been the integration of advanced functionalities. Applications that leverage consumer-facing artificial intelligence tools have recorded revenue growth four times higher than the average of other categories. This trend drives the company to actively consider new solutions to support AI agents and predictive coding platforms, trying to maintain intact the standards of security and privacy without stifling the flexibility required by modern generative engines.

Definitions matter, especially in a period of strong regulatory pressures. The notion of the "App Store ecosystem" adopted by Apple and Analysis Group extends beyond the boundaries of the classic centralized store on iOS. It also includes installations from alternative marketplaces and direct downloads from authorized manufacturers' websites in specific jurisdictions, transactions that, while circumventing the official billing platform, continue to rely on the APIs and proprietary security services made available by iOS.

CEO Tim Cook's Statements

Tim Cook's statements emphasize the strategic importance of the community, defined as the beating heart of the system, highlighting the commitment to providing stable technologies for creating valuable applications. However, the publication of this data collides with a tense regulatory scenario. Apple must indeed manage antitrust lawsuits filed by third parties (such as in the recent case of the removal of the Rave app for content moderation issues) and investigations initiated by international competition authorities, among which the pressure from the Indian Competition Commission stands out, accusing the company of abuse of market dominance.
