Amazon's Robots Will Talk to Employees: Proteus Learns Human Language

Amazon's fleet of ground robots is preparing for a crucial generational leap. The e-commerce giant has unveiled the new evolution of Proteus, its fully autonomous warehouse robot, which abandons management through proprietary software code in favor of an interface based on natural language powered by artificial intelligence. The goal is to simplify human-machine interaction in logistics centers, allowing operators to assign tasks to robots just as they would with a human colleague.

Until now, managing the Proteus robotic systems, characterized by a low, flat profile ideal for lifting heavy loads and moving large carts, required the use of dedicated terminals and software. With the introduction of AI, the dynamic changes radically.

According to Scott Dresser, Vice President of Amazon Robotics, it will be enough to verbally indicate the objective to be reached: the robot will then autonomously calculate operational priorities, optimal trajectories, and timelines for completing tasks.

Proteus Learns to Speak: A Breakthrough in Collaborative Robotics

Improvements are not limited to the voice interface. The new generation of Proteus will be able to operate in significantly larger areas within logistics nodes. While current models are primarily confined to loading and unloading zones (the docks), the new system will be able to move wherever package transport is needed. This includes moving incoming containers, transfers between various workstations, and direct support to employees throughout the entire distribution and delivery chain.

Amazon is testing the technology in its research and development labs but has already outlined a precise commercial roadmap: the debut of this version of Proteus in European warehouses is expected in the first half of 2027. The arrival of the robot fits into a broader automation strategy that sees the expansion in Europe of other technologies, such as the container manipulation system tested in Barcelona and the touch-sensitive robotic arm Vulcan, which are ready for large-scale deployment as early as next year.

The announcement reignites the inevitable debate about the employment impact of advanced automation. Amazon continues to defend its investments in the robotics division, asserting that these machines are designed to assist and support the human workforce, not to replace it. The company emphasizes that it has hired hundreds of thousands of employees globally, precisely in parallel with the introduction of its automation technologies in warehouses, in an effort to optimize workflows while reducing physical strain on people.
