Fallout 76, Infestations: Exploring Appalachia Becomes (Finally) More Dangerous

Bethesda has released the new free update for Fallout 76, titled Infestations, an expansion that fundamentally alters the exploration of Appalachia through new dynamic invasions in the outdoor areas of the map. This update marks the 68th free update since the game's launch and once again demonstrates the ongoing support that the development studio has provided to the multiplayer title set in the Contaminated Zone.

With Infestations, as many as 40 areas of Appalachia can suddenly transform into territories occupied by hostile factions. When an infestation takes control of an area, the normally present enemies are replaced by a single dominant faction. The threats available at launch include Blood Eagles, Cultists, Communists, Mole Miners, Burned Ones, Super Mutants, and Robots.

Infestations can appear in the Forest, Toxic Valley, Ash Heap, Wild Appalachia, Mossy Mire, and Blueberry Bog. Multiple events can remain active simultaneously, and if ignored by players, factions will move to other areas of the map, continually altering the balance of Appalachia.

Bethesda has designed infestations primarily for more experienced players. The map only shows a rough indication of the affected area, while accurate identification requires direct exploration. The team recommends using public teams dedicated to exploration to enhance the chances of quickly finding active events and reaching allies via fast travel.

The new activities introduce a higher level of difficulty compared to standard content. Enemies deal more damage, are more resistant to attacks, and are accompanied by an elite boss with random mutations that change the encounter. Each boss also possesses an exclusive weapon.

Rewards are one of the central elements of the update. Common enemies from infestations can drop 3-star legendary gear, while eliminating the boss always guarantees a 4-star legendary weapon or armor. Bethesda also introduces new modifications dedicated exclusively to this content. Among the examples shown by the team are Vector, an armor modification that increases the precision of the S.P.A.V. at long range by 10% up to a maximum of 50%, and Blur, a weapon modification that increases damage as the durability of the equipment decreases, up to 120%.

To celebrate the debut of the update, Bethesda will increase the frequency of infestations during the first two weeks. From June 7 to 15, the protocol "P.R.O.T.E.C.T." will also launch, an initiative dedicated to the community with free in-game rewards. From June 8 to 15, a free trial of Fallout 1st will also be available.

The update also kicks off Season 25: Appalachia Under Siege, which introduces additional challenges and new rewards dedicated to the construction of a post-nuclear farm. Among the most requested novelties by fans is the pet Deathclaw for the C.A.M.P. The creature can be obtained through the dedicated package available on Steam, Xbox, and PlayStation. The content includes exclusive cosmetic items and furniture.

Bethesda also expands the fishing system with the arrival of seasonal fish, available from the first Tuesday after the summer solstice. The new fish will allow for the creation of special recipes and will receive seasonal updates throughout the year with autumn, winter, and spring variants.

An important technical intervention dedicated to radiation resistance is also included. Armor, atomic armor, legendary modifications, and consumable items will now offer significantly higher protection against environmental radiation. According to Bethesda, values ranging from 1,500 to 2,500 resistance points will allow for drastically reducing damage in highly contaminated areas, including nuclear zones.

Fallout 76: Infestations is already available on Steam, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4. Additionally, the game is available for free for subscribers of Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus Extra, including all expansions.
