Apple is working on a new anti-theft feature for iPhones: iOS will lock automatically

Apple would be developing a new security feature for its iPhones. The smartphone could automatically lock in certain contexts. For example, when someone snatches the smartphone from the user’s hand, the software might be able to detect the event and lock the smartphone automatically. Confirmation regarding the development of this feature has come from 9to5Mac, which analyzed the source code of the operating system, revealing early indications of this feature. To activate automatic locking, the iPhone will be able to use various data coming from the smartphone’s sensors. The new features are expected to be introduced with the next version of iOS.

For example, the accelerometer will be able to detect sudden and abrupt movements typical of a quick and violent snatch. In addition, the feature will also monitor the distance between the iPhone and the paired Apple Watch. If the two devices suddenly move apart, in fact, the software will activate an immediate lock to secure the data.

The same rules for Theft Protection of the devices are also expected to be applied. In cases where a potential danger is detected, the iPhone will lock if not connected to the home Wi-Fi network or another known location.

The new system Apple is working on takes inspiration from the anti-theft system of Android smartphones, which uses similar solutions to lock the device when a theft attempt is detected. The new features are expected to be introduced with iOS 27 and may be revealed during the WWDC 2026 event scheduled for June. More details regarding this should arrive soon.
