The Witcher 3: CD Projekt announces the 2027 expansion after an accidental leak, updated PC requirements

CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed that it is working on a new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, titled Songs of the Past, with a planned release date in 2027. The news accidentally leaked on the company's RED Launcher, forcing an early announcement ahead of the original schedule for the next day's REDstreams.

This is the third expansion for the game, following Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine from 2016. Development is entrusted to Fool's Theory, a veteran studio that has previously worked on the original Witcher 3.

Updated System Requirements

With Songs of the Past, CD Projekt updates the minimum requirements for PC:

  • OS: Windows 11 64-bit, Windows 10 no longer supported
  • RAM: 12 GB
  • Storage: 70 GB on SSD, HDD no longer supported
  • GPU: GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT 8GB with 6 GB VRAM
  • CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 or Core i5-8400
  • API: DirectX 12 exclusive

Some players woke up today to the announcement post of Songs of the Past on their RED Launcher, and of course, it quickly spread across the internet.

"We are currently co-developing the expansion with Fool's Theory and will share more details at the end of summer, so stay tuned."

The expansions of The Witcher 3 enrich Geralt's story deeply: in Hearts of Stone, the witcher confronts the mysterious Gaunter O'Dimm and the tragic fate of the immortal Olgierd von Everec, in a dark tale of wishes and consequences. In Blood and Wine, he moves to the bright Toussaint to investigate a series of murders linked to a dark secret, in a larger and conclusive adventure that introduces new mechanics and a fully explorable region.

According to recent rumors, the new expansion of The Witcher 3 might take Geralt to the remote and mysterious Zerrikania, an exotic region never explored in video games, dominated by impenetrable forests and wild landscapes. Here, the witcher might become involved in ancient conflicts related to a dragon cult, revered as deities but often a source of danger, in a rich open-world adventure filled with exploration, new creatures, and secrets. It remains to be seen how successful this initiative will be after all these years without new expansions.
