BYD prepares to challenge European small cars with a compact 'big inside': DOLPHIN G DM-i

BYD has launched a new offensive in the European electrified car market with the new DOLPHIN G DM-i, a model destined for the B segment that will debut in showrooms by the end of June. The car represents a strategic shift for the Chinese manufacturer, as it is described as the first model developed specifically for the needs of the European market.

The new DOLPHIN G DM-i measures 4.16 meters in length and 1.825 meters in width, dimensions that place it in the heart of the compact segment. One of the key elements that BYD is focusing on is the ratio between external dimensions and internal space, especially regarding rear passenger room and cargo capacity.

On a technical level, the DOLPHIN G DM-i adopts BYD's Super Hybrid DM-i technology, a plug-in hybrid solution that prioritizes electric traction most of the time. The system primarily uses the front electric motor, while the thermal unit kicks in to optimize efficiency and range on longer journeys.

BYD also mentions a total range of over 1,000 kilometers by combining a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery. The company emphasizes that the DM-i system is designed to provide a smooth and quiet driving experience, approaching the typical experience of pure electric vehicles while maintaining the operational flexibility of a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The stated goal is to offer an accessible solution for those looking to reduce consumption and emissions without sacrificing the ability to undertake long journeys without frequent stops for recharging.

Currently, BYD has not yet communicated prices, configurations, and complete technical specifications for the new DOLPHIN G DM-i. More details will be released in the coming weeks ahead of the expected European commercial launch by the end of June.
