Denuvo Appears at the Last Minute in 007 First Light: Community Infuriated

Less than a week before the official launch, 007 First Light has become the center of discussions in the PC community due to the introduction of the anti-tamper system Denuvo in the Steam version of the game. The presence of the DRM is now indicated on the title's page on the Valve platform, but according to reports from the SteamDB change log, the integration would have occurred only on May 21, just prior to the commercial release.

IO Interactive's decision has generated mixed reactions among users. In the Steam forums dedicated to the new James Bond game, many players have expressed disappointment over the late addition of DRM, especially among those who had already pre-ordered. A segment of the community believes that earlier communication would have allowed users to evaluate the presence of anti-piracy protection with greater transparency.

Denuvo Anti-Tamper is employed by numerous publishers to protect titles during the first weeks following the launch, which are generally considered the most important commercially. The software operates at the application level, integrating directly into the game executable, with the aim of hindering modifications and cracks. However, over the years, the system has often been criticized by the PC user base for potential effects on performance, loading times, or CPU resource usage, although the impact can vary significantly from game to game.

Discussions about Denuvo also persist regarding the limitations tied to online authentication. In some cases, a lack of periodic contact with verification servers may prevent the software from launching after a certain period of time without connection. At the same time, the protection tends to complicate the use of mods that alter the game executable.

The addition of DRM close to the release calls to mind the recent case of LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, another title that arrived on the market with Denuvo and quickly became a topic of online discussions. The presence of the anti-tamper system continues to divide the user base between those who consider DRM a necessary tool to limit piracy in the early marketing phases and those who, on the other hand, believe it ultimately penalizes legitimate buyers.

007 First Light will be available from May 27 on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5, while the version for Nintendo Switch 2 is expected by the end of the summer.
