BYD Seems Convincing: Will Enter Formula 1. Talks with Former Red Bull Racing Team Principal
BYD is now reportedly convinced to enter Formula 1, having initiated a series of contacts at the highest levels of international motorsport. According to information that has emerged in recent hours, the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer has intensified discussions following a meeting in Cannes between Stella Li, the company's executive vice president, and Christian Horner, the former team principal of Red Bull Racing.
Clearly, the world's most followed motorsport competition represents an ideal stage to increase its popularity among the public. Formula 1 serves as a powerful tool for international visibility, especially at a time when BYD continues to expand its operations outside of China.
Initial rumors surfaced as early as March, with the FIA president reportedly interested in the brand. New reports indicate additional meetings are planned with representatives from F1 and the FIA. However, the project is still in its early stages, and there are no concrete guarantees about an official future entry into the championship.
Several technical scenarios remain open. It is not yet clear whether BYD intends to develop its own power unit or rely on an existing engine supplier as a customer. Various operational options are also on the table, including acquiring shares in an existing team or creating a new structure with the potential introduction of a twelfth team on the grid.
If BYD were to enter Formula 1, it would hold significant value for the entire Chinese automotive industry. The brand is one of the most aggressive producers in the global electric and hybrid vehicle market, with particularly rapid growth in Europe. An increase in visibility would also provide a greater perception of reliability towards an industry that many still view with skepticism.
In recent years, the company has invested in building new facilities and expanding its European commercial network, in an attempt to strengthen its margins outside the domestic market. In China, internal competition among EV producers has indeed increased price and sales volume pressure.
Formula 1 could therefore become a premier technological and commercial showcase for BYD, useful for consolidating brand recognition internationally and reinforcing the perception of its competencies in developing electrified technologies.
