HONOR CHOICE AI Note, the AI recorder that recharges from your smartphone

Digital recorders with AI-based transcription are no longer a novelty. Within just over a year, a new product category has established itself, with now well-defined features: a pocket-sized device that records audio, an app that transcribes it, and an AI engine that generates summaries, reports, and other structured documents. The basic requirements, which in Porter’s pyramid represent the "qualifiers," are now clear and shared by all manufacturers. The competition now lies in differentiation factors: how comfortable the hardware is, how effective the AI processing is, and how sustainable the economic model is in the long term. With this perspective, we tested the HONOR CHOICE AI Note, a product that enters an already established market bringing with it some significant competitive advantages and a quality-to-price ratio that deserves attention.

What an AI recorder does

Before diving into the product details, it's worth remembering what to expect from a device in this category, especially for those who have yet to use one. The workflow is simple and consists of three phases. The first is recording: you press a button, and the device captures the audio of a meeting, interview, lesson, or phone call. The second is transcription: the recording is transferred to an app that converts it into text, identifying the different speakers. The third is processing: you select a template, essentially a processing profile that guides the AI towards a specific format (meeting minutes, interview summary, lesson notes, etc.), and the system generates a structured document based on the transcription.

In the case of the AI Note, the AI features are five: audio transcription, mind map generation, speaker recognition and differentiation via voiceprints, translation into 133 languages, and an intelligent query system. The latter function operates in a context different from that of report generation: once the document is obtained, you can interact with the AI to have it extract specific information, ask for clarifications on sections of the recording, or rework the content into different forms. The translation, supported in 133 languages, further broadens the use scenarios in international contexts where meetings often occur in multiple languages.

The product

The HONOR CHOICE AI Note is the size of a credit card (85 x 53 mm) with a thickness of just 2.89 mm and a weight of 30 grams. Its aluminum body conveys a feeling of sturdiness that is surprising given its size. It magnetically attaches to the back of the smartphone or conveniently fits into a wallet.

The hardware integrates two MEMS silicon microphones and a bone conduction microphone, specifically designed for recording phone calls when the device is attached to the back of the phone. The claimed range is 5 meters in a quiet environment, with a transcription accuracy that HONOR states is 98% under optimal conditions. It must be noted that this value is obtained in a laboratory at normal volume in a quiet environment: in real-world conditions, with background noise and varying distances, accuracy will inevitably be lower, as is the case with all products in this category. The device also features an intelligent scene detection system that automatically switches the recording mode based on the context, distinguishing between environmental recording and recording from a mobile device attached to the phone.

The internal memory is 64 GB, more than sufficient for intensive use considering that recordings are regularly transferred to the app. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.3 and dual-band Wi-Fi at 2.4 and 5 GHz. The 130 mAh battery ensures up to 24 hours of continuous recording, a competitive figure although slightly lower than some competitors. The full recharge time is about 100 minutes, and the stated standby time exceeds a year.

But the most relevant advantage in terms of hardware is the recharge. The AI Note supports both magnetic wired charging and, most importantly, wireless charging directly from your smartphone, provided that the latter supports reverse wireless charging. Just place the device on the back of the phone to recharge it, without proprietary cables to carry around and without the risk of losing them. We tested it with an HONOR Magic 8 Pro, and the charging worked flawlessly. It’s a convenience that is particularly appreciated when traveling or during a day packed with appointments: the device recharges during downtime, attached to the phone, without requiring any additional accessories. For those who have used competing products with a proprietary cable, often short and easy to lose, the difference is tangible.

The NebulaRec app

As with all products in this category, the hardware device is only half the solution. The other half is the NebulaRec app, available for Android (Google Play) and iOS (App Store), which serves as an essential companion for transferring recordings, managing transcriptions, and generating documents processed by the AI. The app is exclusively mobile: there is no desktop version or web app, which means that the entire workflow must necessarily pass through the smartphone. This is a drawback for those who primarily work from a fixed station and need to integrate the reports generated by the AI Note into emails or documents on their computers.

The transfer of recordings happens via Wi-Fi and is notably fast: HONOR claims 30 seconds to transfer 5 hours of recording, an improvement that the company quantifies at 71.4% compared to the competition. The advantage is linked to the fact that most competing products transfer files via Bluetooth, with decidedly longer times. An hotspot is created by the device, and the switching procedure, at least on the HONOR Magic 8 Pro used for testing, is immediate; just confirm the switch to the different network. During the few seconds/minutes of transfer, Wi-Fi connectivity is temporarily lost. In our tests, the transfer is indeed very fast and never constitutes a bottleneck in the workflow.

The recording experience

Recording starts with a touch of the dedicated physical button, without needing to interact with the app. This seemingly trivial detail is important in everyday use: you can start recording at the beginning of a meeting with a discreet gesture, without having to unlock the phone and open an app. The app offers different templates for document generation, selectable based on the recording context: meeting, interview, lesson, conference. The choice of template affects the structure of the generated document, and in our tests, manual selection produced more coherent results compared to the automatic mode, which tends to be too generic when the context is not immediately evident from the audio.

The quality of the reports generated by the AI is the point that convinced us the most. We did not limit ourselves to evaluating the transcription itself, which, no matter how accurate, remains an intermediate step, but we thoroughly tested the AI Note's ability to produce structured and usable documents. The summaries are well-organized, accurately highlighting key points and maintaining a logical consistency that makes them genuinely usable as a working basis without having to return to the original recording. The mind maps add an additional level of visual synthesis that can be very useful for those who need to quickly share the contents of a meeting with colleagues who did not attend. Finally, the intelligent query system allows you to interact with the AI based on the generated document: for example, you can ask which decisions were made, which actions were assigned, or what position a specific speaker expressed on a specific topic.

Where it stands out from the competition

The strengths of the HONOR CHOICE AI Note compared to competitors are essentially three. The first, already mentioned, is wireless charging from the smartphone: it eliminates dependence on proprietary cables, simplifies life on the go, and addresses a concrete problem that other products in the category do not tackle. The second is the speed of transfer via Wi-Fi, which makes the transition from recording to transcription practically instant and allows the report to be ready shortly after the meeting ends. The third, and perhaps the most relevant economically, is the 600 minutes of free transcription per month, double what is typically offered by competitors. For a professional who regularly records meetings and interviews, 600 monthly minutes may be sufficient without ever having to subscribe to a paid subscription, which significantly changes the cost-benefit equation of the product. Ten hours per month of recording is, for most professionals, a more than adequate volume.

The autonomy of 24 hours is another competitive figure: it’s hard to imagine a professional use scenario where this is not sufficient. The thickness of 2.89 mm, combined with the weight of only 30 grams, makes it one of the thinnest and lightest devices in the category, contributing to carrying it around without it being a burden.

Price and subscriptions

The device is available for purchase on the HONOR website at this address and is priced at 199 euros; as of the publication date, no promotions are active.

The economic model for services is structured on multiple levels. The free base includes 600 minutes per month of transcription, a generous volume that may be sufficient for many users to never need to pay for a subscription. For those with higher requirements, paid plans with higher minute thresholds are available, up to the Unlimited plan offering unlimited transcriptions. The subscription prices in the app are quoted in dollars: $15.99 per month for Max VIP with 1200 included minutes and Ultra VIP at $25.99 with unlimited minutes. The annual subscription prices are $89.99 and $215.99, respectively.

It should be noted that the Unlimited plan falls within a price range comparable to that of a subscription to ChatGPT or Claude, which for a discerning user makes comparison inevitable: with a general AI service, similar results can be attained, although with a workflow that is less integrated and decidedly less convenient. The free plan of 600 minutes significantly mitigates this aspect, but for those who make truly intensive use of transcription and decide to switch to unlimited, the annual expense should be carefully evaluated.

Is it worth buying?

The HONOR CHOICE AI Note is a mature product, well-designed, and with some tangible advantages over the competition. The wireless charging from the smartphone, 600 free monthly minutes, and transfer speed are three elements that, taken together, position it favorably in a category where the differences between one product and another may seem marginal but make a difference in daily use.

The quality of the AI processing, which is what really matters in a product of this category, is convincing: the generated reports are accurate, well-structured, and usable without significant intervention. The five AI features cover most professional use scenarios, and the mind maps, along with the intelligent query system, add a level of processing that not all competitors offer.

For those looking for an AI recorder to always have with them, the AI Note represents today one of the most complete and well-balanced options on the market. The ratio between what you get with the free plan and the cost of just the device is particularly favorable and makes the AI Note a sensible choice even for those wanting to approach this category of product without committing to a subscription.
