Official Sony Xperia 1 VIII: New Design and 4 Times Larger Telephoto Sensor

Sony has officially debuted the Xperia 1 VIII, the new flagship that aims to further elevate the photographic quality on smartphones by integrating AI into the creative workflow. The focal point of the shooting experience is the new AI Camera Assistant based on Xperia Intelligence, a system that analyzes the subject, weather conditions, and lighting in real-time to suggest color tones, bokeh effects, and specific shooting modes. These suggestions draw directly from the Creative Look philosophy of Alpha cameras, allowing users to achieve professional expressiveness with a single touch.

On the hardware front, the main novelty lies in the telephoto module, which now hosts a 1/1.56-inch sensor. This represents a surface area about four times larger than that seen on its predecessor, the Xperia 1 VII, a generational leap that ensures unprecedented light capture for distant subjects. The triple camera system (16 mm, 24 mm, and 70 mm), all with 48 MP sensors, aims to compete with full-frame sensors in terms of dynamic range and noise reduction.

Official Features of Sony Xperia 1 VIII

To handle high-contrast scenes, Sony has implemented multi-frame RAW processing across all lenses. This technology works to preserve the finest details in both highlights and deep shadows, avoiding information loss and ensuring accurate color reproduction even in low-light conditions.

Aesthetically, the smartphone introduces the ORE design concept, characterized by natural textures that enhance grip and tactile comfort. The device's body is available in four variants inspired by raw gemstones: Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold. Despite the modernity of its lines, Sony retains its cornerstones: the dedicated physical shutter button and the 3.5 mm audio jack. The latter is supported by circuitry that inherits the DNA from the historic WALKMAN to ensure high-fidelity listening.

The audio department is completed by Full-Stage stereo speakers, now perfectly symmetrical on the right and left sides. The new units produce deeper bass and a wider soundstage, improving the clarity of voices and instruments during multimedia playback.

This SoC seamlessly handles heavy multitasking, gaming, and RAW content creation. In terms of efficiency, Sony claims a battery life that can reach two days of use, a result also achieved thanks to targeted software optimizations like smart management of power consumption for energy-intensive mapping applications.

Sony also guarantees a battery lifespan and software updates for up to 4 years. For protection, an optional translucent case with integrated support for vertical or horizontal video viewing is available. We do not yet have details on its arrival in Italy or on pricing strategies for our market. In Europe, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII will debut at €1499 for the 256 GB version, while the premium Native Gold version with 1 TB will be offered at €1999.
