The Immense Engine, a European Graphics Engine Designed as an Alternative to Unreal Engine
Arjan Brussee, co-founder of Guerrilla Games and former technical director of Epic Games, has announced that he is working on a new graphics engine called The Immense Engine, designed to offer a European alternative to the major technologies currently dominated by American and Chinese companies.
Brussee is a historical figure in the video game industry. In the 1990s, he participated in the programming of the Jazz Jackrabbit series for Epic Games. Later, in 2003, he contributed to the founding of Guerrilla Games, a studio known for numerous successful titles. After his experience at Boss Key Productions, he returned to Epic Games, where he held positions related to the development and management of Unreal Engine for eight years.
Back in the Netherlands, Brussee explained in an interview on the Dutch podcast De Technoloog that he wants to create a graphics engine fully hosted in Europe, developed by European professionals, and compliant with the regulations of the continent. According to the designer, there currently does not exist such a solution on the market. The Immense Engine would therefore be born to fill this gap and offer an alternative option to Unreal Engine and Unity.
The Immense Engine and Brussee's Work
The project's goal is not only related to the video game industry. Brussee believes that the creation of three-dimensional worlds is assuming an increasingly important role in areas such as defense, logistics, and professional simulations.
One of the central elements of the new engine will be the complete integration of artificial intelligence. Brussee argues that current graphics engines were designed for a traditional interaction model, based on menus and manual commands, and that this approach needs to evolve. In his view, AI can radically change the way complex software is developed. By using a well-organized structure of intelligent agents, it would be possible to achieve results that normally require the work of many specialists. With The Immense Engine, Brussee aims to combine decades of experience in video game development, attention to European regulatory needs, and new AI-based technologies.
