Samsung's Smartwatches Can Predict Fainting, Thanks to AI

Samsung has been working for a long time to make its range of wearables increasingly comprehensive, with a special focus on health monitoring and user wellness. An example in this regard is represented by the Galaxy Ring project, which will have a new generation in the future aimed at ensuring a substantial leap in quality.

In the meantime, the company continues to improve its Galaxy Watch, particularly regarding health monitoring. This confirmation comes from a new clinical study conducted with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in South Korea. The study demonstrated the capacity of Galaxy Watches to predict episodes of vasovagal syncope.

An Effective Solution

The combination of heart data collected by the smartwatch and AI algorithms, which are increasingly central in data analysis, allows for the prediction of a possible fainting spell up to 5 minutes in advance. The tests showed that the device is capable of ensuring an accuracy of 84.5%. This result also represents a starting point for the future. Samsung aims to further improve the accuracy of health monitoring, and tests of this kind confirm that the path taken is the right one.

To clarify the impact that such a device can have, Professor Junhwan Cho from the Department of Cardiology at Chung-Ang University Hospital in Gwangmyeong stated: "Up to 40% of people experience vasovagal syncope during their lifetime, and one-third of these have recurring episodes. An early warning could give patients the time to take a safe position or ask for help, drastically reducing the incidence of secondary injuries."

Jongmin Choi, head of the Healthcare Research and Development group, Mobile eXperience (MX) Business at Samsung Electronics, added: "This study is an example of how wearable technology can help transform healthcare, shifting from a model focused on 'post-operative care' to a model of 'preventive care.'"
