On ChatGPT, it is now possible to designate a trusted contact: an additional defense for users' mental health

ChatGPT is an ongoing project with continuous updates. The latest addition is the Trusted Contact feature, already available to everyone after the latest application update.

This is a simple and effective system that allows a user to add a trusted contact to their account. ChatGPT, now powered by GPT-5.5 Instant, will notify this contact if the user shows signs of mental health issues in the future, with particular attention to the risk of suicide.

How Trusted Contact Works

The mechanism behind the newly announced Trusted Contact feature is very straightforward. From the Settings of your ChatGPT account (just click on your name and then on Settings), you can access the Trusted Contact section where you can add one or more contacts.

The description of this feature clarifies its characteristics: "In the future, if you talk about suicide with ChatGPT in a way that suggests a serious risk to your safety, we may automatically notify your trusted contact so they can check on how you are doing."

The selected trusted contact will not receive details or transcripts of chats, but only a notification regarding the potential risk and some advice on how to help. This feature was developed by OpenAI with the consultation of mental health professionals and specialized organizations on the subject.

Trusted Contact is now available through the ChatGPT settings and can be activated by all users, including those using the service with the Free plan.
